2012 Follow the Light Finalist: Matt Kurvin

Follow The Light 2012 is only two weeks away from awarding $5,000 to the most promising photographer within a final batch of dreamers. Amongst this creative lot are Sarah Lee, Ryan Craig, Mike Smolowe, Shawn Parkin and Matt Kurvin. These finalists embody fresh perspective, angular adventure and individual spirit in well composed photography. To make things more personal, we requested 5 photos that did not make their submitted portfolio, alongside insightful captions. Below, the answers:

This is Austin Smith-Ford at Pleasure Point. I like shooting longer lenses in the water. You get really nice depth of field, especially in situations like this.

This was Mundaka on the day before my birthday in April of this year. I guess you could say it was an early birthday present. I was very stoked to surf and photograph one of the world's best lefts.

Santa Cruz Boardwalk in March of this year. We had some crazy rains earlier this year and it completely blew out the Rivermouth. I love the contrast in this one. From the dark, stormy, menacing sky to the light, vibrant colors of the Boardwalk, and the flowers in the foreground.

I shot this double rainbow in March of this year as well. My friend and I were coming back from snowboarding at Kirkwood and this thing just engulfed the sky. I have never seen a rainbow this bright or full in California. We just stood there in awe until it disappeared.

Rincon in January 2010. This was one of the best days of surfing I have ever had, two days in a row for that matter. Leg-burners all the way to the PCH. I even managed to get a few photos.
