MX Adventures: Leaving the West Coast ... talking with Kevin Windham

{jvideo id=259 height=378 width=660 autoPlay=0}

Who dat?

This week I caught up with Kevin Windham. In the video below, Kevin Windham talks about the Superbowl Champions, the NFL's New Orleans Saints, his family, his future plans for racing and beyond.

The Superbowl XLIV champions, the New Orleans Saints, have many fans - among them is none other than the number 14 in Supercross, Kevin Windham. While the NFL season started when Supercross was in its off season, Kevin was able to take part in season tickets to his favorite NFL team - da' Saints. Eventually the 2010 Supercross season got underway in January, which meant Kevin was flying off after those Saturday night Main Events back East to watch the New Orleans Saints Playoff games.

On February 7, 2010 the New Orleans Saints headed to the Superbowl in Miami, Florida and Kevin Windham and his wife Dottie made arrangements to attend this momentous occasion. First, however Kevin had to finish up a Supercross race in San Diego the night before.

A look at X-Fighters Dubai with Jimbo

Round 1 of 2012 Red Bull X-Fighters is in the books. The world’s most prestigious FMX event heads to Glen Helen USA. The new rules set for the 2012 tour shook the results in Dubai and the new contest format raises a lot of questions. Lets get to the bottom of this with Jimmy Verburgh – member of the Red Bull X-Fighters judging board.

Setting up for Corners Mid-Flight

Saving time on the track is always a priority.  If you can master a technique to get faster, you better take advantage of it.  When things get tight during racing, it’s the little things that add up and make a big difference in the end, especially if you can set up for corner more efficiently.  When the outside is not available or you need to make a pass on the inside, sometimes setting up mid air for a corner can help get that pass made.

If there is a berm already there, you don’t have to do this, but if the inside is flat off the downside, this technique will come in handy.  You want to make sure that you have the jump sized up before trying to sit down and set up mid air.  If you come up short or over shoot it, this will hurt.  Especially guys.  Once you have everything timed right, you want to loosen up in the air, trying to get the back end of the bike out just slightly.  You can let the outside leg out and lean in to get the rear end moving.

As you approach the down side, you want to start moving into the correct position for the corner.  You don’t necessarily have to be seated in the air, but as long as you are ready for the landing and corner, this transition will be smooth.  When you land, make sure that your inside leg is ready for the forces of gravity; keep it high and stiff.

If traction is not a problem, you can apply a handful of throttle and accelerate towards the corner.  Remember to keep weight on the outside foot peg and outside elbow up as this will plant you into ground for more traction.   If the downside is harder, you will have to apply the throttle with grace as you don’t want to the rear end to break loose.

This is something that you should start small on and on a jump you are comfortable with.  No sense in trying this on a new jump and getting hurt.

Tough times at Hawkstone for Alex Snow

Alex Snow – Image by Ray Chuss

With the Maxxis British Championship coming in to the latter part of the series, Alex Snow and the Oakleaf Kawasaki team rolled in to the world famous Hawkstone Park for round 6 of the championship. With the weather also making a much welcome turn from the recent weeks of constant rain the sandy circuit was considerably dry and dusty facing the riders with a completely different surface to usual.

Snow in was looking to start the day one a strong note and continue his strong form, he did so qualifying in a strong 6th in the first session. As he then enterd the superpole to try and repeat his first session, a few mistake hampered his progress ending the session in 9th.

As the gate dropped on race one, Snow sufferd a little to much wheel spin on the concete pad leaving him with a little bit more work to do than he would like. He soon made some passes and moved up in to 10th place. Although looking slightly uncomfortable Snow tried to settle in and find his rythum, but suddenly on lap 4 the Hawkstone track bit Snow causing him to crash hard in the wooded section of the track. After trying to compose himself and catch his breath, Alex slowly picked himself up, managing to finish the race but couldnt pull the time back he’d lost to gain any points finishing in a low 25th place.

After feeling a little second hand and with sore ribs, Snowy was keen to make up for the dissapointment of race one in the second race of the day. A better start this time seen Snow well inside the top 10, he looked and felt much better this time out but still didnt look quite at his best, he rode a solid moto to finish 9th at the finish which was enough to put him in to the mixed mx1/mx2 final race.

With a even better start in this one Snow was on course to try and finish the day on a high note. He rounded the first couple of turns in 8th place, but some quick moves early on moved the Kawasaki rider up in to 6th position. Snow then put his head down and rode strongly all the way through the 30 minute plus 2 lap race to finish the day with a well deserved 6th at the finish. With his two point scoring rides this was enough to put Alex 9th overall in the MX1 class. Although sliding back a place to 9th in the overall championship, the point have tightened up considerably with only 13 points separating himself and 6th place.

Alex Snow ”not a great day by any means for me. I really didn’t need a non point scoring ride, but unfortunately crashes happens and im quite happy I only came out of that with some bruised ribs. Although the day started bad, im glad i managed to turn it around in the final moto and leave here on a better note.”

The Scrub

Watching the pros, you can guarantee that every rider is going to scrub.  Even amateurs are perfecting the “Bubba Scrub.”  This is not just something they do for fun.  This is a technique that can help you stay lower in the air and get back on Mother Earth and on the gas.  If you see someone perform the scrub right, it looks effortless and so smooth.  It really is an art form as no 2 scrubs are alike.  For this reason, it is important to start things slow and on a single or something small; eventually working your way up to normal size jumps.

The first thing is to approach the face at a slight angle.  If you plan on leaning to the right, you want to angle yourself to be pointing slightly to the left.  This allows you to turn the bars and lean the bike without scrubbing off of the track.  As the front wheel comes off of the lip, you want to begin to turn the bars the same way you are leaning.  You don’t want to try and make this like a turn.  That will only throw the rear end out and you will still be upright, defeating the whole purpose of this.  Keep this in mind and just lean.  As I said before, this is a unique technique, so it you prefer to stand, stand up.  If you like to sit down, have a seat.

Once you feel you are off of the jump, you want to keep turning the bars down.  This gets the motion of the whip going.  You really want to try and pivot and squeeze with your legs.  This is not just a movement with your arms; you want to help the bike through the flow with your hips and legs.  As you approach the peak of your flight, you will start to feel a point where you need to bring it back.  I have not brought it back in time and I can tell you, it hurts.

You will feel the bike want to come back to its normal, upright position.  To get this process going, simply turn the bars back the other way.  Combine this with a little bit of gas (to get the rear wheel spinning) and the centripetal motion of the wheels will get you back to the right position.  Don’t forget that apply pressure on the foot pegs so you can help bring the bike back with your legs.

When you get the bike straight, be sure to get on the gas.  This will help you drive through any swaps or any problems you have with the scrub when you land.  Like I said, this is a one of kind technique.  You need to practice this and start small.  Jumps that are slower and have long faces will help you out a lot and when you feel comfortable enough, transition to faster, shorter jump faces.  Everything should be a fluid, smooth motion.  It will come faster than you think and you will be throwing scrubs like James himself.

Nick de Wit Switching Summers

Nick de Wit is one of the most down to Earth riders that you will ever meet. He’s always motivated to go out and get a good ride and you will never see him slacking a job needed to be done. In 2004, he was the first FMX rider out of South Africa to compete in international competitions. Since then, he has been to many prestigious events from X-Games to Red Bull X-Fighters and ridden on locations that you only see on postcards. Nick has spent a bit of time back at home for the South African summer. We catch up with him as our 2011 season starts to get some high voltage.

Chad Reed comes to America - 2002 interview, by Rick Johnson

Chad Reed had just left racing the MX GP's in Europe to give it a go in America. Reading back on this early 2002 interview, little did anyone know that Chad would go on to win two AMA Supercross Series titles, an AMA National Motocross title, make hundreds of thousands of fans, start his own racing team, and more. A nostalgic and good read ...

At some time in our racing careers we have all had dreams of racing in America and becoming a champion. Through your efforts, many people are able to live out those aspirations. Win, loose or draw - you are a true champion! Thanks.

Good Luck mate!

Blair
Perth - Western Australia
-----------------

How about having an entire country watching your career? This sums up the phenomenon that is Chad Reed. I've admired him on the track, but I wanted to find out more about him.

RJ: Chad, how is it going for you in your first year of racing here in the States?

Chad: I think it's gone well. The first race (125 East in Indy) I won, although I didn't feel like I was 100% ready with riding the four-stroke. The week after (Minneapolis) was a much better ride for me. I got the holeshot, and won, and I consider that one of the best races I've ever done.

On the Wednesday before Minneapolis, I couldn't even walk because of a crash practicing earlier in the week. I wasn't quite sure if I was even going to race. As I rode, I got warm, and it felt better, so I decided to race. That night in Minnesota couldn't of been any better. I won my heat, and then I won the Main. I feel like I didn't make any mistakes in the Main, which is hard to do.

RJ: Tell me about the injury. What exactly did you hurt?

Chad: I had a crash on the Monday before Minneapolis. I landed on my lower back, and it messed up my groin and lower back. I was weak in that area, and it was quite painful. I have a trainer working with me named Jeff Spencer who really got me prepared to race that weekend.

RJ: I worked with Jeff. He's great, and a great motivator as well. Plus he has so much knowledge and experience. He's worked with us motocross guys, but he's also working with Lance Armstrong (Tour de France Champion).

Chad: Jeff's great. I work with him on a day to day basis. He knows how to treat various injuries and how far to go on training. When I went to his house and saw all the people he has worked with in the past .. it was impressive! Johnny O'Mara, David Bailey, Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods ... all the motocross guys .... the list goes on. He works with Lance and Tiger on a day to day basis as well. Everything he says is positive, and makes good sense, so I really enjoy working with Jeff.

Despres Wins Stage Four And Improves Overall Lead In Desafio Litoral

KTM’s rally supremo Cyril Despres had a good day at the office on Thursday taking his second stage win in the new Desafio Litoral Rally and extending his overall lead to almost six minutes in this new six stage-rally in Argentina, part of the ‘Dakar Series’.

KTM riders filled the top three places in the stage with Poland’s Jakub Przgonski finishing one minute 31 behind Despres and KTM factory teammate Taddy Blazusiak in third and trailed the leader by about nine minutes. While Despres, a four-times Dakar winner is one of the world’s greatest exponents of the sport and Przgonski is also a top rally rider, Blazusiak is KTM’s Extreme Enduro and EnduroCross specialist. He is in Argentina experiencing rally for the first time to ‘stay on two wheels’ during the US EnduroCross Championship’s summer break.

Despres and Przgonski are also 1-2 in the overall standings with two stages to go but Taddy crashed out in Tuesday’s stage and is just going along for the experience. Wednesday’s Stage Three was scrapped due to heavy fog that made it impossible for the accompanying rescue helicopters to be airborne.

Speaking after Thursday’s stage Despres said he felt he was back in terrain similar to the Dakar. “Today the track was flatter and sandy. We were no longer on the hard pack red earth and on the narrow jungle trails like in the first two stages. That red earth could be very unpredictable and slippery like ice,” he said. “The average speed today was 120 km/h so it was also very fast. The distance between Przgonski and me was not that big but I felt I was controlling the race. I’m feeling good and confident, the bike is going well and I’m looking forward to the next two days.” Cyril is riding his Dakar-winning KTM 450 Rally bike.

It was also a good day for Taddy, especially as when he crashed out on Tuesday he had somewhat aggravated an old shoulder injury. “When I first started riding this morning I was in quite a lot of pain, but it got better as the day went on,” he said. “Today was a good day and for sure the riding is getting better. I still have a lot to learn with the road book and navigation, which is not easy at such high speeds but now it’s becoming more automatic and I am having fun.” Taddy is riding a KTM 450 series model rally bike similar to the one used by KTM Enduro Factory Rider Johnny Aubert in the 2012 Dakar Rally, also his first venture away from the rigors of Enduro racing.

Riders had an unexpected ‘rest day’ on Wednesday after the cancellation of Stage Three but they had a long hard ride on Thursday with a Dakar-like race distance of 427.10 km over two stretches and separated by a liaison of 216 km. Thursday’s stage from Bella Vista to Correntes was the longest and most demanding of this six-day event.

It now looks like the rally will be decided between Despres and Przgonsi who have put significant distance between them and the rest of the field. Up until today Chilean KTM rider ‘Chaleco’ Lopez was also in the running but he had technical problems today and lost too much time to be able to catch the leaders in the remaining two days.

Traversing Flat Corners

One of the great things about a worn down track is the help from ruts and berms.  Sure they can make things difficult, but they essentially help us keep our speed up in the corners.  Just like in NASCAR, the angled surface allows the bike to lean over and still find plenty of traction.  However, there are situations where you don’t always have this luxury and you must bring out your inner flat tracker.

Since you don’t have any help with your leaning, the entrance needs to be a little bit different.  When approaching the corner, take a wider approach than you normally would.  If you have ever watched any kind road racing, drives use wide lines that are smooth arcs.  Traction is very important here, so you want to get all of your braking done before you start to lean in.  When you are upright, the tires have the most bite for better braking.  Just like normal turns, you want to be in the attack position and keep looking ahead.

When it comes time to sit down, remember that this is one, fluid motion: get off the brakes, sit up on the gas cap, leg out and apply the throttle.  The smoother you are, the easier the corner will be.  Sitting up close to the gas cap will put as much weight on the front wheel as possible for optimal traction which will give you some confidence when you lean in.  The best way to sit is on the outside edge of the seat.  This keeps your weight centered and straight down, rather than out and away.

The basics really play a big role in this situation.  That outside elbow better be up and the outside peg should be weight.  Again, this puts more emphasis on traction.  If you feel that the rear wants to drift out still, you can drag the rear brake to weight the back end down.  This is a great technique to use on the exit when power is put to the ground.  However, if you have a steady throttle hand, you won’t need to use this as often.

Drifting out too wide can leave the door open for a pass.  Keeping your elbow up and weight on the outside peg gives you the traction to power through the turn and avoid drifting out.  Unlike riding through a wide arc, squaring up flat turns robs momentum and drive.  It is time consuming and a waste of energy.  Once you find that balance between leaning and twisting the throttle, these corners become excellent passing opportunities.

Ducati Team travels to Laguna Seca

The first of two American stops in the 2012 MotoGP Championship will take place on Sunday at California's spectacular Laguna Seca circuit, a beautiful and challenging track that winds through the hills east of Monterey. The United States Grand Prix is very special for Nicky Hayden, as it was the site of his first GP victory, in 2005, and of another win the following season while he was on his way to the world title. Valentino Rossi is also fond of the track's unique atmosphere and old-style layout, which played host to a win for the Italian in 2008, as well as to three additional podium finishes. The "stars and stripes" round is also important for the company from Borgo Panigale, for whom the United States represents the most important target market, and one that is continuously growing, as Americans have long associated Ducati with quality, technology and exclusivity. As is the case every year, the Ducati Island will serve as a meeting point for the many Ducatisti who will come to support the Ducati Team and its riders over the weekend. VALENTINO ROSSI, Ducati Team "Laguna is a difficult track, with many bumps and a lot of elevation change, but at the same time it's beautiful and fun, in part because it's rather old-style. I really like the fans and the general feel. Although my last test at Mugello was ended early, we were able to begin working with some details, and we'll probably be able to use some of them at Laguna, even if we're talking about a small percentage of the package that they're working on at Ducati. Last year we went okay at Laguna, so we'll see what happens this weekend." NICKY HAYDEN, Ducati Team "Of course I like Laguna, so I'm excited to go there and see my home crowd and all my friends in the AMA paddock. We've been getting a little closer to the front lately, but now is no time to rest. We have to keep working, because now the gains will be more difficult. Laguna is certainly not easy, and I doubt the lap times will be much different with the 1000s than they were with the 800s. I'm not even sure we'll use sixth gear, and as was the case at the Sachsenring, we'll probably spend a lot of time working with the wheelie control and just trying to use that power when it's available. The new tyres should work better at Laguna, especially in the colder mornings and on the right side. My goal is clear: go there, have fun, and try to get the best result of the season." VITTORIANO GUARESCHI, Team Manager "The next two GPs in the United States are obviously very important for Nicky, and he would like to take advantage of the progress shown in recent weeks in order to do well for his fans. Vale came very close to making the podium at Mugello, but we must manage to give him the opportunity to be more effective in qualifying as well. At Laguna we'll continue working with the settings that we've been perfecting for a few races according to our riders' respective needs, and we'll seal the fourth engines for both. Like the third one, already in use, it was made in a way that makes it possible to install new parts that are intended to improve rideability. For this race, we'll have some of the updates that we tried at the Mugello test, and those will be followed in the next races by subsequent evolutions." WMX Rider Insight: Sayaka Kaneshiro

At the 13th annual 'A Day in the Dirt' I got a chance to talk with Sayaka "Teriyaki Sauce" Kaneshiro, WMX Pro #15

How was your racing today?

It was good, I thought we had a practice first, I went out and it was actually a race. I was just racing and riding around, I felt like ... WOW!

What did you think of the event overall?

It was to difficult racing for me, because I didn't ride my pace. I rode about 6th place, less than I wanted to. I got the same number as last year, I just tried to do my best.

September Issue 2012 SURFING Magazine

September Issue 2012 SURFING Magazine

About midway through the making of this issue I realized that I was preaching plenty but practicing little in the DIY department. Here I was, making a magazine about surfers working on amazing side projects — creating brands, making movies, recording soundtracks — but what was I working on besides the magazine?

Not much.

So I brainstormed a project to work on. One that I’d always been drawn to but never actually pursued. It would take me out of my comfort zone (I couldn’t just make a blog), and it would be something tangible because, as someone who is terrible with his hands, it would give me the sense of pride I’d always envied in people who actually make things.

I would make T-shirts. Start a brand. By removing all the vowels from my name I’d start the brand TYLR. People would pronounce it “Tyler” and I would correct them, “No, it’s Taylor.” And they would go, “Ohhh,” and feel like they knew a secret and feel connected to the brand. When they heard other people call it “Tyler” they would correct them and thus perpetuate the secret. It would be like hidden tracks on CDs, or “animal style” at In-N-Out Burger. My brand would grow and it would provide great supplemental income.

But instead I went surfing. I made the rest of the magazine, because that’s my actual job. I went to Mexico with my girlfriend and some friends. I ate tacos and drank margaritas, which I didn’t even make myself; they were delivered to me poolside. I probably could have launched TYLR on a Sunday afternoon: found some shirts, a screen printer, made some stencils. Instead, I carried on with my life.

While reflecting on my failed venture, I looked at my favorite “side projects” that I’ve accomplished in my life. I looked at traveling and surfing big waves. I thought about how much harder those things were than making T-shirts. The expenses and instability of travel. The training and danger that accompany big waves. Why could I do those things, and not make a shirt with some scribbles on it? It wasn’t like I was picking the cotton and sewing the things.

It boiled down to desire. I actually wanted to travel and surf big waves, I didn’t actually care to make a clothing brand. Because when you actually want to do something, it doesn’t matter that life gets in the way. You’ll politely tell life to back the f–k off, because you’re doing it whether it supports you or not. But if you don’t really want something, life is a beautiful excuse for inaction.

For this issue I interviewed former filmmaker and sports agent Josh Landan. Josh recently quit his job, uprooted his wife and two children and moved from Ventura to San Diego to start Saint Archer Brewery. Were there hurdles to jump over? Naturally. Was the timing right? No. It never is. But now Josh is doing what he’s always dreamed, creating a brand owned by him and action sports athletes. He’s doing what he’s always wanted to do. Outta the way, life, I’ve got beer to make. How his venture unfolds remains to be seen, but, like Josh said at the end of the interview,  “Worst-case scenario, my best friends and I get free beer. I just didn’t want to look back on life and think, ‘I wonder what would have happened if I actually did that. I wonder if I could have really done it.’” —Taylor Paul

Zillertal and Kamp-Lintfort done and ready for more

This weekend the team split up into two groups and we nailed Kamp-Lintfort Germany and the Kini Festival in Zillertal Austrial. Like every year, Zillertal goes wild with the party and motorsport action. Although we were able to calm down with the broken door tradition, we still dropped the big bottle on the dance floor for the second time. In Kamp-Lintfort, we pulled up with the promo tent and had it packed all weekend.

Go Pro Moto – QLD Moto Park MX1 Motocross

Some footage from my Go Pro Moto helmet cam. Riding a CRF450 on motocross track 1 at Queensland Moto Park. The track is rutted and has the normal braking and acceleration bumps as it doesn’t seem to be prepped that often. Like track two it has a handful of table tops but with a mix of tight and wide corners and short straights.

Overall the track is not bad considering what off road riding parks are available in Queensland.
