Troy Lee Designs Calls Up Jessy Nelson

For the past two years the Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Honda team has been supporting amateur standout Jessy Nelson.

news12 mx jessynelson pro1

Jessy was one of the original members of the Red Bull Jams program so it is only fitting that he makes his way to Red Bull’s support team. Nelson has been very successful early on this year winning several championships along the way. Originally Jessy was supposed to join the pro team after Loretta Lynn’s but he has been spending some time in California doing motos with his teammates and it was decided by all parties to move him up for the 2012 outdoor season.

The 2010 Mentawai tsunami wreaked a wide path of destruction in the island chain and wiped out the village of Masokut, on Sipora Island.

With the help of SurfAid, the Masokut community has since rebuilt their village on higher ground, safe from another tsunami. However the children, aged seven to 10, are being taught in a one-room timber shack that has plastic sheeting for walls.

After the tsunami, SurfAid’s Psychosocial Support Program team ran activities that helped the children return to a normal routine and reduce the effects of the trauma, and the school building was constructed as a temporary structure.

“To say the school is ‘basic’ is an understatement,” said SurfAid Schools Program manager Milton Brown. “The ‘desks’ are simple square pieces of timber for the children to write on but they have to sit on the floor, which is rough-hewn timber with cracks. In this cramped space, three dedicated teachers are doing their best to educate the future of Masokut.”

Brown, who hails from Sydney’s northern beaches, said $25,000 was needed to build a six-room school with toilets. “Avalon Lions Club generously donated $6,000 towards the project and retired Pittwater High teacher Evan Jeffrey organised a recent fundraiser at Avalon RSL that raised another $2,000, so we thank everyone who has contributed so far,” he said.

Former Pittwater Mayor Alex McTaggart, who was on a surf charter boat with fellow Avalon surfers when the tsunami struck during the night in October 2010, helped raise the Lions Club funds.

“Nine Avalon surfers were in the area and we went ashore on the island of South Pagai. There had been a small village opposite the surf break but nothing could prepare us for the utter destruction and loss of life,” McTaggart said.

“We did what we could to assist providing water, food and medicine and making sure the authorities in Padang, on the mainland, were aware of the situation.

“As we received a lot of media coverage we decided to raise some funds through the Avalon Lions Club to assist in the recovery of these villages and working with SurfAid was the best avenue to help.”

Milton Brown, a former teacher at Barrenjoey High, which is nestled at the northern end of Avalon Beach, said what was heart-warming about the project was that a village elder, Bapak Marsius, had decided to donate the land for the new school.

“Marsius had limited access to education and he survives by farming cocoa and other cash crops to support his family. But his eldest daughter is finishing her university degree in Jakarta and she said she would return to the village and teach in the school,” Brown said.

Marsius met with SurfAid staff recently to show them the land he is donating, which is in a safe zone high above any possible tsunami. The government will build a road close to the land and the school will be in the middle of the village, making it easy for the children to get there from both north and south of the village.

Marsius’s smile never faded while he spoke of how excited he was about the new development in his village. “We are grateful for this school,” he said. “I talked to my family and we all agree, our children’s education is the best way for us to get out of poverty.”

Milton Brown said SurfAid and the community will work together to build the new school and the regional Mentawai Government will also assist with funding.

“We will work together to build a bridge towards a better future for their children,” Brown said. “When resources are limited, little things can help so much. The people of Masokut and the Mentawai are hard working, willing and full of hope. Let’s make this dream happen for them.”

If you wish to donate to the project, please contact Milton Brown.

High School Surf Team Showdown

HIGH SCHOOL SURF TEAM SHOWDOWN

San Diego-based eyewear brand SPY® is partnering with Sun Diego Boardshops for a fun and unique surfing event uniting eight San Diego high school surf teams and their communities to experience an individualistic sport in the same way their classmates do with team sports like baseball, football or basketball. The Sun Diego High School Showdown Presented by SPY will feature The Game™ format—a one-of-a-kind competition where surfers work together for the win, rather than only attaining scores for their individual performance.

“We love to be involved with surfing events like this in our own backyard,” says Devon Howard, SPY Marketing Director and ’92 grad of University City High School, which has a team competing in the event. “We’re really excited about helping offer up The Game™ format for the kids because, like our brand, it’s an unusual approach to the normal way of doing things. Also, with onsite presence from The California Surf Museum, the Showdown event educates students about their community’s immense surf history and culture—which spans back over nine decades.”

The Game™ changes the landscape of competitive surfing’s individual approach by providing a fun and entertaining atmosphere for spectators and athletes alike. The only surfing competition that incorporates timeouts, coaches, referees, and an easy to follow scoreboard, The Game™ allows each high school to be represented by a maximum of 12 athletes. Teams are comprised of four starters, two substitutes and six non-active reserves. Like a three-inning baseball game, “heats” have a top and bottom of each period lasting 12 minutes, with a total running time of 90 minutes. Each ride will be scored individually; with top wave scores added together to form the final team tally and determine the winners. Further legitimizing the event, the judging panel is comprised of former and current professional surfers. Along with honoring the winning teams, awards for Most Valuable Player and Most Radical Maneuver will go to standout performers at the end of each game.

SPY is donating $2,000 on behalf of the winning high school surf team to the event’s cause—the California Surf Museum, a 501(c)(3) non-profit resource center that showcases historical surf culture memorabilia and surfboards. At the end of the day-long event, Sun Diego will be handing over two $1,000 checks to The Game’s winners, rewarding one school per division.

“The California Surf Museum is proud to participate in the event with SPY and Sun Diego,” says museum director Julie Cox. “The museum exists to capture and chronicle surfing’s art, culture and heritage for the education and enjoyment of future generations. The Showdown is well aligned with our mission and is a great opportunity to engage the youth in San Diego’s rich surfing history—something they’re now a part of.”

The competition kicks-off at 7:00 a.m. on June 2 with Division 1 hitting the water immediately and Division 2 at 8:45 a.m. Finals will commence at 2:45 p.m. with an awards ceremony starting around 6:15 p.m. Prior to the final round, SPY surf athletes like Nate Tyler, Parker Coffin, Alex Gray, Joel Tudor and Ryan Burch will hit the water for an exciting and progressive expression session. Participants will be treated to food and drinks from a local eatery as the day unfolds.

Thor’s Blake Baggett Maintains Points Lead in 250 Class

Thor’s Blake Baggett hasn’t always had good luck at the Freestone County Raceway, but on Saturday, he was able to walk out of Texas with the 250 class points lead. In both motos, Baggett had to come through the pack, leaving him little time to catch the leader. His 2-2 finish has stretched his lead to 14 points over second place. Teammate Ivan Tedesco had a tough run in Texas, but still finished 19th despite a hard first-turn crash in the second moto.

In the 450 class, Jake Weimer rode two come-from-behind motos, but Moto 2 was the most impressive as he climbed from 40th – after a first turn crash – to finish sixth. His 3-6 moto result was good enough for fourth overall and he currently sits fourth in the standings. Broc Tickle had a great run in the opening moto to finish seventh, but a mechanical in the second moto left him to finish 14th with a 7-40 result. Brett Metcalfe finished inside the top 10 in eighth with a 13-10 moto result.

At the GNCC in Masontown, W. Va., Thor’s Kailub Russell finished as the runner-up, but still is close to the points leader in the championship standings. He is only three points down, while teammate Charlie Mullins sits in third despite not finishing the race in West Virginia. Maria Forsberg kept her win-streak alive in the women’s class after coming through the pack following a bad start.

DC Moto TF Day with Ryan Morais

Ryan Morais' goal for a 2010 West Coast Lites Supercross championship came to a screeching halt in just the 3rd round of the series, when another racer landed on the back on his bike, sending both riders crashing to the ground. This unfortunate crash would sideline Ryan for a few rounds, but he would eventually return to racing action in Seattle and finish the season 10th overall points. When the AMA Motocross Nationals came into around, Ryan was ready to get back to racing, but going into the second round he was once again out with an injury. Ryan has been busy the past few months, but is back and ready to set some new goals for the upcoming 2011 series. I spoke with Ryan about what he learned over the past year and his prospects for the new season.

Angela: Well Ryan, here we are just a few short weeks until the first Supercross race of the season; let's talk about sponsors and the bike?

Ryan: Yeah, DC Shoes stepped up recently and is sponsoring the entire Rockstar Energy Suzuki Team, so I am really excited to be a part of it. I have only been with this sponsor for a few days now and they're really taken care of the team. I'm with the same team as last year, Rockstar Energy Suzuki, with the same mechanic (Rene Zapata), and the same team manager, and owner, everything is pretty much the same, but Suzuki really is stepping up this year. Last year we were on a 2009 carburetor bike, so we were kind of behind the ball, but this year we are on the new 2011 fuel injected, the whole new chassis and everything, and Suzuki has really helped us out with factory support. Our bikes are pretty much in house bikes, running Shoei Suspension, so everything is looking great. Everyone has been doing a great job and the people at Yoshimura have been doing a lot of testing and getting our bikes dialed in, so I'm excited for Anaheim 1. Our bike should be one of the best ones out there, making things really competitive, and that is very cool.

Three points separate the top three Moto2™ riders

With only three points separating the top three Moto2™ riders, the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya promises to be yet another nail-bighting affair in the quest for intermediate-class supremacy. With 71 points so far, Pons 40 HP Tuenti rider Pol Espargaró currently leads the championship by one point over Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol's championship favourite Marc Márquez, who has now recovered from a thumb injury sustained in his crash in Le Mans. Espargaró has been on the podium twice at the Catalan circuit in the 125cc class, while Márquez took a win on a 125cc bike and was runner up in Moto2 last year. Trying to upset the Spanish one-two on their home ground will be Interwetten-Paddock's Tom Lüthi, no doubt brimming with confidence off the back of his dominant wet-weather performance in France, where he took his first victory of the season.Speed Master's Andrea Iannone will aim to edge closer to the top three after putting in a solid performance last time out. The Italian, who is renowned for being stronger on race day than in qualifying, will take heart from the fact that he qualified in pole position at the Catalan circuit in the 2010 Moto2 season. Closely on his heels, Marc VDS Racing's Scott Redding, who recorded his first podium in 22 races at Le Mans, will undoubtedly be looking for a repeat this weekend, though his teammate Mika Kallio will also be pushing to get back towards the front once again.Italtrans Racing Team's Claudio Corti, who managed his first podium ever at Le Mans, is in a buoyant mood and looking to continue his momentum, while JiR Moto2's charging rookie Johann Zarco will look to make amends for his crash at his home round. Having grabbed the headlines for reasons other than racing, Blusens Avintia's Julián Simón will not only hope to put memories of his bad crash at Catalunya last year out of his mind, but also that he won't have to push his bike across the line to finish. There will be one change to the usual Moto2 line-up, as Catalan rider Jordi Torres replaces the injured Xavier Siméon in the Tech 3 Racing team.World Championship Standings Moto2™1- Pol Espargaró - SPA- Kalex - 712- Marc Márquez - SPA - Suter - 703- Thomas Luthi - SWI - Suter - 684- Andrea Iannone - ITA - Speed Up - 465- Scott Redding - GBR - Kalex - 44

Jakub Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert Ducati) scored his first Tissot-Superpole win of the season after setting a lap time of 1 minute 47.626 seconds in the last of three sessions. It was his second career pole position in this class, following the one he obtained back in 2009 at Misano. Despite a few spots of rain appearing on the riders' visors during a dry Superpole contest Smrz rode with full pace right at the end to earn the perfect starting place for Monday's two SBK races. Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) was second quickest and would have been on pole but for the late push put in by Smrz, a rider who has stamped his authority on the practice sessions since the start of the weekend. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) posted third best time, with the front row places competed by Checa's team-mate Davide Giugliano, the Italian looking at ease on his first visit to Miller. Jakub Smrz: "I am very happy to take the pole because in all the practices we have been doing a good job and my bike has been perfectly prepared. I had a small crash in free practice but we got the bike back in time for Superpole and I am happy that we should have good pace for the races tomorrow." Carlos Checa: "I am quite satisfied and I think we did a good job for the race and for the qualifying as well. Smrz was very fast because I expected to take pole position but at the end he went faster and congratulations to him. We got a start on the front row, I feel quite comfortable and I think the sun will arrive. We have had many wet races and sessions this year and this track is pretty nice in the dry, so hopefully tomorrow it will be good weather." Tom Sykes: "I'm surprised to be on the front row because we have been struggling here at Miller. Once again the guys have done a great job because we changed something for Superpole to try and make something happen and fair play to the Kawasaki team because on the first lap on a race tyre I knew we had a lot better package." Davide Giugliano: "It's my first time here and when I arrived at Miller, I went around in the car and could immediately see it was a great circuit for me and I really like it. So far the bike has never been as good as it was today but as long as it goes like this, then things are looking good." Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) was fifth, Monza pole man Sylvain Guintoli (Team Effenbert-Liberty Racing) sixth, Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) seventh and Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing) eighth, despite not being able to set a lap in Superpole 3. Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) qualified ninth after just failing to get into the final Superpole 3 session. His team-mate Leon Haslam failed to make it out of Superpole one and qualified on the fourth row, in an unlucky 13th place. Leon Camier (FIXI Crescent Suzuki) missed out on Tissot-Superpole qualifying but his team-mate John Hopkins was 16th. The Utah USA Round will have the honour of being the venue for the 600th race in World Superbike, which this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Results: 1. Smrz (Ducati) 1'47.626 average 164.135 kph; 2. Checa (Ducati) 1'47.810; 3. Sykes (Kawasaki) 1'48.062; 4. Giugliano (Ducati) 1'48.220; 5. Rea (Honda) 1'48.563; 6. Guintoli (Ducati) 1'48.568; 7. Biaggi (Aprilia) 1'48.794; 8. Laverty (Aprilia) 1'48.354; 9. Melandri (BMW) 1'48.422; 10. Fabrizio (BMW) 1'48.566; 11. Davies (Aprilia) 1'48.669; 12. Zanetti (Ducati) 1'49.929; 13. Haslam (BMW) 1'49.552; 14. Berger (Ducati) 1'49.750; 15. Canepa (Ducati) 1'49.818; 16. Hopkins (Suzuki) 1'49.966; 17. Baz (Kawasaki); 18. Badovini (BMW); 19. Salom (Kawasaki); 20. RJ Says - Supercross Safety 2012

Anyone who saw what happened with Trey Canard and Ryan Morais at Dodger Stadium Saturday night knows that it was a horrendous crash. Nobody likes to see that. Unfortunately that’s part of our sport, and crashes do happen.

I’ve heard opinions from everybody about how it could have been prevented. What it comes down to is that two guys were trying to occupy the same space at the same time and wound up going down very hard. It was a scary crash - it affected a lot of people in addition to the two riders.

What I would like to talk about is how Feld Motorsports, the AMA, track personnel, and the Asterisk medical crew handled the whole situation.

WMX Rider Insight: Jackie Ives

In only her second season as a professional Motocross racer, Jackie Ives is currently sitting in 16th position for the WMX point standings through the first four rounds of the 2010 AMA Woman's Motocross Championship Series.

Jackie Ives (17) cheezing on the line at Thunder Valley

You might think 'How cool is it to be racing professional motocross all over the USA!' But it's a lot harder and a lot more work than you might think! Not all racers get the big bucks and the factory rides like James Stewart, Ryan Dungey, and Chad Reed. As a matter of fact, most of the woman racers in the USA have to work quite hard during the week just to make it to the race track!

Fast Freddie Lindgren speeds to maiden SGP victory in Gothenburg

Swedish hero Fredrik Lindgren sent Gothenburg's Ullevi Stadium wild after winning his first ever FIM Speedway Grand Prix gold medal on Saturday night and declared "now I'm going to win some more." Fast Freddie topped the rostrum in the FIM Swedish SGP after passing world champion Greg Hancock on the first lap of the final. Aussie champion Chris Holder was third and wild card Thomas H Jonasson underlined his SGP qualification credentials by claiming fourth spot. Lindgren's victory was the perfect way to lay the ghost of Gothenburg 2008 to rest. He finished second to Rune Holta in the Ullevi Stadium that year, despite winning all of his heats and his semi-final. The 26-year-old had had enough of being reminded of that near miss, so he was ecstatic to romp to the greatest triumph of his career to date. He said: "I've heard people talk about what happened in 2008 a million times this weekend. I'm pretty sick of it. "Everyone has been asking me all the time – when's your time going to come? When are you going to win? So it feels great to finally do it in front of my home crowd in Gothenburg. "I'm really happy and now people can stop asking me when I'm going to win my first Grand Prix." Asked whether he believed it was the first of many victories, he said: "I have to believe. Now I know I can do it. I know I can win, and I have to win some more." Lindgren had achieved three seconds, three thirds and two fourths from his previous eight SGP final appearances. With the gold medal hinging on one race, producing a magical start and flawless four laps under intense pressure is far from easy, as Fast Freddie has discovered since he joined the Grand Prix elite in 2008. Speaking after moving up to eighth in the overall standings, he said: "It feels really great to have been able to do it in the final when the pressure is on, and not just finish second or third. "I was really happy with my start and I managed to get over Holder. He had been really fast all night. It meant I could beat him to the dirt line, get some momentum going and I got Greg with a good cutback on the third and fourth bend. "On the final two laps, I got more and more concerned about whether I could hold on, but I just kept the throttle open and hoped I would be fast enough." Hancock may have left Gothenburg as the SGP series leader, but Lindgren took all the plaudits after turning around what was shaping up to be a night to forget. He managed just two points from his opening two races, but a lightening fast victory in heat nine turned the tide. A last place followed, but the Orebro-born man bagged second in heat 19 behind Hancock to steal into the semis on countback with seven points. He only pipped Polish star Jaroslaw Hampel into the last eight by virtue of his one race win. "It can be such a small difference in the Grand Prix," Lindgren said. "Even though I only sneaked in and had the last pick of gates, I was able to win from every gate position and that was really important." Runner-up Hancock has raced in all 148 SGP rounds staged since the competition replaced one-off World Finals. He has competed in 28 of those events on Swedish shale. Despite living in the country during the European season, he is still waiting for his first Grand Prix victory in his adopted homeland. But after starting the meeting with one point from two races, he was delighted to flip his fortunes upside down and claim the silver medal. The Californian admits his young sons Wilbur and Bill played their part in Team Hancock's turnaround too. He said: "We started off God-awful and that's one of those things. My kids came into play tonight, though. I was sat there in between races thinking about one of their songs, which goes something along the lines of 'keep trying, don't give up.' "I had to change bikes after my second race. The first bike just wasn't doing it for me, and it was a good move. The second bike was much better and then things started to pick up." Holder is now fourth in the World Championship on 52 points – just six behind Hancock – and was delighted with his consistency as he emerges as a genuine title challenger in his third season as an SGP regular. He said: "It's so hard to get to the final, so I'm stoked to get on the rostrum. I'm happy for Freddie that he got a win in front of his home crowd – that was awesome. I'm stoked with the whole night and I had some good points. "You've just got to get good points in every round and I'm so happy to get 17. Being third is pretty cool." Next up for world speedway's finest is the FIM Dansk Metal Danish SGP at Copenhagen's PARKEN Stadium on June 9. WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS: 1 Greg Hancock 58, 2 Nicki Pedersen 56, 3 Jason Crump 55, 4 Chris Holder 52, 5 Tomasz Gollob 49, 6 Jaroslaw Hampel 46, 7 Emil Sayfutdinov 37, 8 Fredrik Lindgren 37, 9 Antonio Lindback 31, 10 Andreas Jonsson 30, 11 Peter Ljung 21, 12 Kenneth Bjerre 20, 13 Hans Andersen 20, 14 Bjarne Pedersen 19, 15 Chris Harris 17, 16 Thomas H Jonasson 11, 17 Josef Franc 9, 18 Przemyslaw Pawlicki 7, 19 Jason Bunyan 1. WMX Rider Insight: Vicki Golden's 2010 Season Review

When Vicki Golden turned pro in 2009, she went into the season open minded; she just wanted to see how she'd do in the Pros. It worked out pretty well for Vicki as she consistently finished in the top 4 in the first 5 rounds of the 2009 WMX season. After a season ending injury to Trey Canard, Geico Honda gave Vicki an opportunity to ride Trey's bike the remainder of the season of the Women's Motocross Series. It was a great experience as she finished 4th in Colorado, but her season ended prematurely as she injured herself in a practice session at Perris Raceway before the 6th round in Washougal.

In 2010 Vicki came back healthy and was picked up by Moto Concepts Yamaha. She wasn’t as consistent as she expected, but she did finish the season 4th overall points, with a 3rd place finish at the Pala Raceway National. In 2011 she will be running the #4 plate in the AMA Women's Motocross Series.

The 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship Season Celebration

This year's AMA Motocross Banquet & Season Celebration was held in a magnificent banquet room at the Pala Resort & Casino. The room was decorated beautifully, lined with motocross décor, as well as a stage decorated with the championship bikes and awards. The line-up of food, appetizers, desserts, and beverages was very elegant and delicious.

After dinner, the awards ceremony began. Jason Weigandt, along with Tim Cotter hosted the show. And of course Jason started it just like he does many of his shows - after slamming down an energy drink.

Jason went on to talk about each round of this summer's AMA Motocross Nationals, with a list of funny jokes pertaining to all the good and bad situations at each of the races. After that, the awards and trophies were handed out.

The night was filled with special memories, good times, and laughs. One poignant moment was when Kevin Windham accepted the award for 'Sportsperson of the Year'. Kevin always has a great way of expressing himself, but made a great comment towards his friend & the team manager, Mike LaRocco. He commented on Mike's motivation, that pushed Kevin to work hard and do his best ... it was touching, but at the same time very funny.
