No more seniors at stanmore motocross track

Gold coast city council has made the decision to prevent seniors from riding at Stanmore motocross track indefinitely. The decision handed down by Senior Recreation Officer Bruce Flick bflick@goldcoast.qld.gov.au means the end of the road for a club which has operated for over 30 years catering for senior and junior motocross.

The decision also stipulates that the club could be reopened for Junior riders supporting up to 250cc bikes. One might ask why not seniors up to 250cc as a compromise if noise is the only issue. However further constraints on any future operation of the club facilities are biased towards gold coast residents over both committee and general club members who live in other outer Brisbane and Sunshine Coast districts.

The Gold Coast council is also supportive of the Gold Coast motorcycle club at Reedy Creek facility looking into town planning approval for the future use catering of the location for all bike classes.

Life and Limb for Motocross – My Recovery from Injuries

Love of the Sport

I love motocross and I live for the sport. I’ve joined a couple of amateur circuits in Melbourne, NSW, and Queensland within the last few years and it was awesome. However, I do intend to qualify to compete in the professional league some time in the future. Sadly, that dream may be put on hold. A couple of months ago, I was preparing for the MX Nationals (which was on Aug 19, 25, and 26). I was cruising along the track without any difficulty until a sudden, sharp, and stabbing pain raced through my left arm, causing it to jerk and clinch the front break. Next thing I knew, I was flying head-first into the ground.

One Thing Led to Another

I blacked out for two hours. I woke up in a hospital with a neck brace, a cast for my wrist and leg, and some bandages. It was a total nightmare for me, not because I wasn’t used to motorcycle injuries, but this was the most terrible set of injuries for me because I broke my leg and my arm. Doctors took an X-Ray on my left wrist and found out that I had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). I was bummed about CTS. It totally meant not being able to use my left arm for a while.

My List of Injuries

Thank God for my protective gears. If I hadn’t worn them, I could have acquired more injuries. So, after my complete diagnosis, my injuries include:

  • Fractured left shin
  • Fractured right wrist
  • Bruised lung and ribs
  • Concussion

The fractures were not so bad, given that they did not break through the skin, but it did give me a reason to go through physical therapy. I was lucky enough to find elevate.com.au because it helped me accommodate my medical needs.

3 Months in Recovery

I was fortunate enough to survive, and needless to say, I was few of the lucky ones. According to my therapist, it wasn’t their first time to accommodate motocross injury patients. Some of them were partially paralyzed from a broken spine while others suffered from various muscle tears and bone problems. My leg injury is painful, yet proper pain management is done during therapy. Doctors “jokingly” told me that I could no longer ride the bike again if my left leg doesn’t heal up. That was a freaky motivational speech or a very frightening idea.

To this day, I walk with a limp and a cane because the fracture has not healed completely yet. Doctors told me that full recovery is expected within the next 2 months and that I should continue with my physiotherapy sessions.

Primary school surfers get crowned in New Zealand

Kehu Butler: the future of surfing in New Zealand

Kehu Butler and Kea Smith have claimed the New Zealand National Primary School Championships, n 1.0m waves at Fitzroy Beach, New Plymouth.

Junior surfing is dominated by Mount Maunganui surfers. Butler and Smith dominated the contest to reconquer the Boys and Girls divisions.

It may be an ominous sign for the region as the strong Bay of Plenty Scholastic Surfing Team kick off their campaign at the National Scholastic Championships.

The famous James Bond surfing scenes in "007 - Die Another Day"

007 Die Another Day: James Bond learning to surf in Jaws

The surf scene is long and intense. James Bond opens the "007 - Die Another Day" spy movie with a big wave surfing stunt. But, who actually played Pierce Brosnan in the infamous night ride?

James Bond is just like a Swiss Army knife. The multi-skilled British spy is able to jump bridges in luxury cars, take-off in heavy, hollow slabs and teach the perfect Martini recipe. "Die Another Day", the twentieth film in the James Bond series, showcases an opening surfing scene which helped boost ticket sales in the box office.

Can you figure out who and where was surfed the epic 007 night session? Was it Pierce Brosnan himself? Yes, the Irish actor is a keen stand-up paddleboarder and surfer, but no, he didn't ride those waves.

Bianca Buitendag wins the Sata Airlines Azores Pro

Bianca Buitendag: blonde surfer in blue waves

Bianca Buitendag has taken out the Sata Airlines Azores Pro, in clean 2-3ft surf, over Pauline Ado.

Buitendag has been on a rampage all-day, starting her Azorean campaign with an incredible 9.5 out of 10 in the very first heat of the event, which she earned with a combination of three radical backside hacks on a running righthander.

"I feel great !" Buitendag stated. "I started really bad in Australia this year, so when I went to Peru it was kind of no pressure and I got a win there ! It was just way beyond my expectations  and getting two wins in one year is just plain crazy so I'm stoked! It's the most heats I've surfed in a day for sure, I think 6 since 7:30 this morning".

Deegan takes on GRC Las Vegas

The Global Rallycross Championship was back in action over the weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway following the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. With over a two month break between GRC rounds, Brian Deegan has kept busy competing in global Rally events, Off-Road truck racing, and freestyle motocross.

Deegan went head to head with some of the worlds best drivers including friend and fellow racer, Tanner Foust who took the win in round 4. Deegan was ready to get back in the fight and mix things up during round 5 in his Ford Fiesta. Deegan was following Foust closely trying to make the pass to the podium and came in a clean 2nd place finish. US riders found the American Kiteboarding Association

Kiteboarding: US riders have founded the American Kiteboarding Association

A group of North American kiteboarders is putting up the American Kiteboarding Association (AKA), a governing body for the sport in USA.

US kiteboarders have been riding on their own. There are several regional and state kiteboarding organizations, but the country has never set up an official governing body.

Things may change in the next months. Riders from Team Fluid have founded the American Kiteboarding Association (AKA), a non-profit institutions that aims to meet the requirements to represent USA in International Kiteboarding Association (IKA).

5 Steps To Buy Now and Make your Motocross Dreams Come to Life

The long list of adrenaline-pumping feats for motocross makes this sport lead its own league of enthusiasts and non-racers who share the same passion for extreme sports. Feel the dirt and the thrill of making a lean machine fly you into the air and safely back to the ground. With dirt tracks and obstacles on the way, the varying levels of intensity of riding an amazing piece of engine makes building motocross credibility a real challenge.

Although this sport proves to be an interesting way of testing both man and machine, keeping a keen eye on every detail can make or break your motocross dreams. In this light, a reputable online shopping store can be a helpful guide on the things that you should buy now to back up your sports the right products that will keep you safe on the track. There may not be that much thrill in shopping, trying out online shopping can help you with your motocross dreams in five simple yet often overlooked steps.

Step 1. Health. Before you go threading the challenging tracks and flying into the air, you must pay attention to your health. Being a member of such a tough and intensely competitive crowd, you need to make sure that your body is equipped with the right kind of fuel to keep you going. The health and food section of the online stores feature a fine selection of products that allows proper food storage and convenient food processing so you can quickly prepare healthy and nutritious meals that are fit for motocross kings.

Step 2. Equipment. Even as a beginner, you need to complete a list of supplies to keep you safe on that lean machine. From protective pads and gloves exercise fitness machines, this online store has got all your training amenities covered.

Step 3. Maintenance. This section doesn’t talk about your bike. This concerns about how you maintain ideal conditions for your body. Compact and portable ergonomic chairs along with electronic massage gadgets should relieve your aches and pains after a long day on that track.

Step 4. Entertainment. All work and no play do not exactly define an absolute formula for success in motocross. Hence, take the time to play some video games or listen to your playlist with the game consoles and compact audio systems plus accessories that can conveniently buy now.

Step 5. Giving back to your fans. On your road to success, never forget the love and support given to you by your fans. As you hit the high road, make them feel involved and part of your journey by gifting them with simple trinkets like a simple shirt, pins and other novelty items. Buy now and give them something that will continually remind them that you appreciate their efforts in standing there on the track rooting for you to take the lead.

As you can see, there are more to online shopping than what meets the eye. In truth, shopping and motocross have a lot of things in common. If thrill and excitement is what you seek, then feel free to make a feat of discovering the finest deals on your daily training essentials.

Saving Energy on the Track

With heart rates constantly through the roof, moto is no doubt one of most physically demanding sports on the face of the planet.  Your heart is pumping just from the adrenaline, but throw in a rough track, huge jumps and some whoops, you will definitely work every energy system in your body.  Although it is still hot as hell down here in the Deep South (not hell, just Florida), things seem to be cooling down for the rest of the country.  However, just because it is not as hot, fatigue will creep up on you before you know.  Save yourself some pain and read on!

One of the most important things to remember is to stand up.  I know this is probably a no brainer, but some people will still ride as though the track is still smooth.  Most of the time, you will have to stand up later into corners and then get up sooner when exiting.  For rougher corners, it is even a good idea to stand up through the whole turn and look to the edges of the track for smoother lines.  Many European riders will do this because the course gets so brutal, if you sit down; your back will take all of the impact.  This is not the best idea because your back could tense up and result in some serious pain.

This next tip goes hand and hand with standing up: gripping with your legs.  I have said many times before that you will save yourself from arm pump and getting tired quickly if you squeeze the tank.  The quadriceps are large enough to take the impact from a rough course and they can handle this stress much better than your forearms and biceps/triceps.  You almost want to think of your arms as hinges to your core.  Relaxing your grip on jumps will also keep your “hinges” from cramping and pumping up too much.  To help get through extra tricky sections; you can even apply pressure to one side of the tank with your leg to help steer the bike.

If you watched the 250’s, then you saw Barcia killing it everywhere.  Other than his crazy style, he was doing something that caught my eye more than a few times during the second moto.  If you notice, he was riding on his back wheel, a lot.  The deep holes and moguls were not as bad when he could get the front wheel up.  The back wheel would just roll over the bump and the rear shock absorbs the tire’s vertical travel.  If you go through a rough section with both wheels down, it just rocks you back and forth.  I am not saying to do a full blown wheelie here, but just getting your front tire to skim or get over the rough stuff will make life much easier.  Remember that riding in a high gear will help the suspension work properly in the chop and provide you with more traction to get the front tire up.

One final tip is to just relax!  If you know that the track is rough, just accept it and ride.  When you tense up, any bump and hole you hit is sent throughout your entire body.  If your breathing is deep and even, you should be able to roll your shoulders back and ride smoother.  By your rolling them back, you can keep that attack position much easier and you open up the diaphragm for this more efficient breathing.  Like I said earlier, this is not hard stuff.  Keep it simple and remember the basics!

Rainy Mettet

The Mettet Super Biker is one we look forward to every year. A weekend of good supermoto racing with legendary names on a great track, a dynamic FMX show and good times in the pits. This year we were escorted by the rain all weekend long. That mixed up the cards for the racing and put jeopardy on our show.

What’s He On? Craig Anderson’s African Safari Sled

They told me to book a flight to Skeleton Bay — swell of the season. To leave tomorrow and link up with Craig. I did not argue. I took two Ambien and woke up in Africa. It was foggy, six foot, below sea level and cranking. In the water the seals were owning it and on land the jackals were hungry. Everyone (Nathan Fletcher, Dane Gudauskas, Danny Fuller, Jeremy Flores) was on small boards. Craig, who got the biggest, best sets that day was on a 5’4’’ disc reminiscent of the hoverboard a la Back to the Future II. I couldn’t understand A) how he got into the big ones, and B) how he was weaving that thing through 30 second tubes.

“I’ve ridden that board in bigger surf, before,” says Craig. “At Ulus, G-land, Deserts. It’s all about the volume. It’s flatter, thicker and wider in the right places, hardly any rocker and a slight single concave. With that extra beef, it catches waves so easily — and then just takes off. It’s the fastest board you could have in this kind of surf.”

Clearly. While some guys, myself included, were pumping for dear life on a standard squash, Craig was stalling in the gaping sand-pits. Styling, even. Speed to burn. “That nice rounded pin probably helps, too,” says Craig. “So as long as you make the drop and set a line, the board does the rest for you. In bigger surf on that 5’4’’ — you’re guaranteed an amazing time.”

I wanted that time. I ordered one up from Hayden Cox, the young Aussie shaper/newly Venice resident and had it waiting for me when I got home. Hayden wanted to meet us and go for a surf and quickly came down to the SURFING office with his lovely woman Danielle to do both. Hayden rips, is genuinely amazing and talks about board design like an MIT rocket scientist — if an MIT rocket scientist ripped and looked vaguely like Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall. The board, by the way, goes mental, even when you’re not in Africa.

Double line at Swatch Free4Style

Estavayer-le-lac is a beautiful place. Add some music, action sports, parties, sunshine, Swiss cheese and you get a great event. Lay back, relax and enjoy. This year, the fmx zone was enhanced with a double line. Levi Sherwood took home the Swatch best move award. Local matador Mat Rebeaud was only a few points behind and finished second.

WMX Rider Insight: Vicki Golden's 2010 Season Review

When Vicki Golden turned pro in 2009, she went into the season open minded; she just wanted to see how she'd do in the Pros. It worked out pretty well for Vicki as she consistently finished in the top 4 in the first 5 rounds of the 2009 WMX season. After a season ending injury to Trey Canard, Geico Honda gave Vicki an opportunity to ride Trey's bike the remainder of the season of the Women's Motocross Series. It was a great experience as she finished 4th in Colorado, but her season ended prematurely as she injured herself in a practice session at Perris Raceway before the 6th round in Washougal.

In 2010 Vicki came back healthy and was picked up by Moto Concepts Yamaha. She wasn’t as consistent as she expected, but she did finish the season 4th overall points, with a 3rd place finish at the Pala Raceway National. In 2011 she will be running the #4 plate in the AMA Women's Motocross Series.

Vicki got back from Geneva, Switzerland a few weeks ago where she participated in a women’s supercross exhibition race with some pretty stiff competition.

John Florence was a very happy camper when Tony Hawk surprised him at lunch with the great news in winning the Kustom Airstrike and $50,000 in cold hard cash!
