Red Bull Teka KTM factory motocross rider Steffi Laier "Ready to Race" in 2011
When Steffi Laier, Red Bull Teka KTM factory rider and two-time Women's MX World Champion takes to the track in the pre-season MX races in Valence, France, this weekend it will be her first competitive ride for 2011. Steffi has been training hard on the bike since mid December and in Valence tests herself against a field of male riders.
At the French pre-season special, she faces off with a strong lineup of riders including those from the Nestaan JM Racing KTM squad led by Joel Roelants, Yentel Martens and young talents like 125 European champion Jordi Tixier of France and Austrian Pascal Rauchenecker. Also in the field are other KTM riders like British rider Nathan Parker (PROPPA-COM KTM and French riders Loïc Leonce (B G R KTM) and Loïc Larrieu (WOLFF KTM). But these and other top riders hold no fear for Steffi who his very well known for her toughness, skill and courage when attacking any MX track.

At the 13th annual 'A Day in the Dirt' I got a chance to talk with Sayaka "Teriyaki Sauce" Kaneshiro, WMX Pro #15
How was your racing today?
It was good, I thought we had a practice first, I went out and it was actually a race. I was just racing and riding around, I felt like ... WOW!
What did you think of the event overall?
It was to difficult racing for me, because I didn't ride my pace. I rode about 6th place, less than I wanted to. I got the same number as last year, I just tried to do my best.

Ryan Villopoto Out for 2012 Motocross Title Defense
Courtesy Monster Energy Kawasaki: Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto will not defend his AMA Motocross title in 2012 after injuring his knee at the Seattle supercross on Saturday night. The two-time AMA Supercross and defending AMA Motocross champion will undergo surgery on his knee this week.
“I’m pretty disappointed right now,” said Villopoto. “I have trained hard for this season and even though I won the supercross title, I really wanted to defend my outdoor championship. I’ve been through injury before and I know how hard I have to work to get back.”

RJ Says - Supercross Safety 2012
Anyone who saw what happened with Trey Canard and Ryan Morais at Dodger Stadium Saturday night knows that it was a horrendous crash. Nobody likes to see that. Unfortunately that’s part of our sport, and crashes do happen.
I’ve heard opinions from everybody about how it could have been prevented. What it comes down to is that two guys were trying to occupy the same space at the same time and wound up going down very hard. It was a scary crash - it affected a lot of people in addition to the two riders.
What I would like to talk about is how Feld Motorsports, the AMA, track personnel, and the Asterisk medical crew handled the whole situation.

DC Moto TF Ride Day with Josh Hill
In the 2010 AMA Supercross Championship series, Josh Hill consistently found himself on the podium. He ended the season sixth overall in points, in which he finished second in 5 of the 17 Main Events. In July, Josh spent time preparing for the 'Speed and Style' event for X Games 16. His practice session went from 'landing a backflip on his first attempt' to 'under rotating the next time around.' This horrific crash sent Josh to the hospital with a list of injuries and a whole new respect for the sport of Freestyle Motocross. I caught up with Josh, at Pala Raceway for the DC Moto TF Ride day, where he talked about his rehabilitation, his plans for Supercross 2011, and more!
Josh Hill at the DC Moto TF Ride Day
Angela: Hey Josh, you are looking good. How are you feeling?
Josh: Yeah I am getting better, everything is starting to heal up and I am getting to where I can function normally again. So it is getting better, but I need to focus on getting my body stronger. That is my main thing right now.

2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series - Seattle Preview
The 2012 Monster Energy Supercross Championships are rapidly coming to a close, but before they do, riders will revisit the western United States for the last three rounds of the series. This weekend, the tour heads to the home of coffee drinkers and grunge music: Seattle, Washington.
Ryan Villopoto already secured the Supercross Class title a record breaking four rounds early, so he is really just out to prove a point at the moment. And prove he did last weekend, taking an uncontested win in New Orleans.
With so many riders getting hurt this season, it has been any guess as to who could wind up on the podium at the remaining rounds, and the Big Easy nearly had two big surprises. Josh Grant made his triumphant return to the box, taking home a very solid second place finish. But the big surprise was Mike Alessi. The MotoConepts rider was running in third place for almost the entire race until he came upon some lapped traffic.

DC Moto TF Day with Ryan Morais
Ryan Morais' goal for a 2010 West Coast Lites Supercross championship came to a screeching halt in just the 3rd round of the series, when another racer landed on the back on his bike, sending both riders crashing to the ground. This unfortunate crash would sideline Ryan for a few rounds, but he would eventually return to racing action in Seattle and finish the season 10th overall points. When the AMA Motocross Nationals came into around, Ryan was ready to get back to racing, but going into the second round he was once again out with an injury. Ryan has been busy the past few months, but is back and ready to set some new goals for the upcoming 2011 series. I spoke with Ryan about what he learned over the past year and his prospects for the new season.
Angela: Well Ryan, here we are just a few short weeks until the first Supercross race of the season; let's talk about sponsors and the bike?
Ryan: Yeah, DC Shoes stepped up recently and is sponsoring the entire Rockstar Energy Suzuki Team, so I am really excited to be a part of it. I have only been with this sponsor for a few days now and they're really taken care of the team. I'm with the same team as last year, Rockstar Energy Suzuki, with the same mechanic (Rene Zapata), and the same team manager, and owner, everything is pretty much the same, but Suzuki really is stepping up this year. Last year we were on a 2009 carburetor bike, so we were kind of behind the ball, but this year we are on the new 2011 fuel injected, the whole new chassis and everything, and Suzuki has really helped us out with factory support. Our bikes are pretty much in house bikes, running Shoei Suspension, so everything is looking great. Everyone has been doing a great job and the people at Yoshimura have been doing a lot of testing and getting our bikes dialed in, so I'm excited for Anaheim 1. Our bike should be one of the best ones out there, making things really competitive, and that is very cool.

Rick Johnson is a seven time AMA Motocross / Supercross Champion. 1984, '86, '88 AMA 250 National MX Champion. 1987, '88 500cc National Motocross Champion. 1986, '88 AMA Supercross Series Champion.
The first race of the 2012 season has come and gone. I'll share with you my opinion on the top guys in the 450 class, the 250 West winner, and what I'd work on if I was racing in Phoenix Round 2.
Ryan Villopoto - I feel Ryan came ready to race. He picked up right where he left off last year. He looks better than I anticipated, as I thought he might come in a bit over confident. If you judge it by this first race, he's in a class by himself.

2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series - Salt Lake City Preview
Not often is there a first time Supercross main event winner in the premier class. In fact, since the beginning of professional AMA Supercross racing in 1972, only 54 riders had taken first place honors until this past Saturday. At round 15 of the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross Series, Andrew Short became the 55 rider to stand atop the podium. While Short practically lead from wire to wire, his win came amongst several unusual circumstances.
With many riders out already this year, the races have lacked the depth that they had last year. But if enough of the top guys are out, suddenly the field is leveled once again. That was basically the scenario that occurred on Saturday. When the gate dropped, Short did not technically get the holeshot, but he was able to find his way into the lead immediately after the first turn.
Ryan Dungey had decided to make his return to racing in the Northwest, so many eyes were on him to step into a lead position, along with the already crowned 2012 Champion, Ryan Villopoto. But Dungey had a mid-pack start, and Villopoto was near the back after the first turn. Only a few turns later, Villopoto fell in a tight left hand turn while attempting to overtake Davi Millsaps. While the fall itself was a slow, low-side mistake, it was the way Villopoto fell that did the damage, as his foot seemed to stick in one place due to the tacky soil, and his bike and body then toppled over. The result was a knee injury that not only ended Villopoto’s evening, but the year as well (a press release went on Tuesday morning stating that Villopoto is set for surgery, but will indeed miss the rest of the 2012 season).
Dungey had issues of his own while moving up through the pack. The Red Bull/KTM rider was running in fifth place and was challenging Justin Brayton for fourth when he clipped Brayton’s rear wheel in a right hand turn and went down. Thus the lead pack was left up to four riders, none of whom had ever taken a main event win.
Following closely behind Short was Dungey’s teammate, Ken Roczen, who had been bumped up to the Supercross Class for the remaining West Coast rounds. Roczen rode within striking distance for the first half of the race, and even got a front wheel in on Short, but was never able to make a pass stick.
Short went on to take the first win of his career and what is essentially a bike without an official home or team, although Muscle Milk Honda has been allowing the crew to pit out of the back of their truck for the last two races. The Larry Brooks and Jeremy McGrath supported effort is in between sponsorships at the moment, so the win will greatly help their cause.
For Short, the last time he won a Supercross event was during his Lites racing days back in 2006. The Colorado native has long been a fan favorite due simply to his positive attitude, great media and fan relationship, and his persistence on the track.
In Lites racing, Ryan Sipes took his first win of the year, but everyone’s eyes were fixated on the riders in second and third. Coming into Seattle, Dean Wilson lead Eli Tomac by four points, and with only three rounds remaining for the Lites West championship (including Seattle), the heat was on. Right off the start the two were at the front of the pack, and ready to continue the points battle. Sipes had the lead, but Wilson and Tomac were second and third and right on each other. On the first lap they traded passes with minimal contact, all the while staying right on Sipes.
Then Wilson made an aggressive pass that pushed Tomac off the track and onto the plywood. After a quick recovery by Tomac, the GEICO/Honda rider was able to close the gap once again on Wilson. Within less than a lap, Tomac was directly on Wilson’s Monster Energy Kawasaki, and repaid the favor, by forcing a pass on the number 15 that sent Wilson to the ground.
Sipes went on to win the race, followed by a charging Musquin in second place. Tomac, with his bike damaged from the contact he had with Wilson, managed to finish third. Wilson could only muster a seventh place, meaning Tomac now leads the points standings by four points over Wilson.
With Salt Lake City serving as the penultimate round, the West Lites title is far from decided. In the last two years, SLC has greatly affected the Lites championship outcome, largely due to unpredictable weather. Will Tomac be able to extend his lead for the second time this season, or will Wilson have a little extra to show in Utah?
For the Supercross class, the title has already been decided, but with the new champ now out for the remainder of 2012, will another rider be able to step up for his first career win or will Dungey be able to take another win before the season is out. We will find out Saturday.

MX Adventures: Leaving the West Coast ... talking with Kevin Windham
{jvideo id=259 height=378 width=660 autoPlay=0}
Who dat?
This week I caught up with Kevin Windham. In the video below, Kevin Windham talks about the Superbowl Champions, the NFL's New Orleans Saints, his family, his future plans for racing and beyond.
The Superbowl XLIV champions, the New Orleans Saints, have many fans - among them is none other than the number 14 in Supercross, Kevin Windham. While the NFL season started when Supercross was in its off season, Kevin was able to take part in season tickets to his favorite NFL team - da' Saints. Eventually the 2010 Supercross season got underway in January, which meant Kevin was flying off after those Saturday night Main Events back East to watch the New Orleans Saints Playoff games.
On February 7, 2010 the New Orleans Saints headed to the Superbowl in Miami, Florida and Kevin Windham and his wife Dottie made arrangements to attend this momentous occasion. First, however Kevin had to finish up a Supercross race in San Diego the night before.

RJ Says: 100% is Back!
100%… It is how I try to live my life.
In 1982, I got a phone call from a guy I knew at the races. His name was Drew Lien. The conversation went like this:
Drew: I dig your bull dog style and never give up attitude. I'm starting a company and would love to sponsor you. I can't pay you right now, but I will give you all the free product you can have.
Me: Whats it called?
Drew: 100%
Me: What will you sell?
Drew: Heat shields and numbers.
Me: I'm in...
A few months later, all the top racers ran 100%: Bailey, O'mara, Ward, Glover, Lechien, Kehoe, Holley, and the list goes on.
From that point on 100% has been my life motto. I am giving 100% in whatever I do. Truck racing, coaching, working or loving my family. Win or lose. Happy or sad.
If I am giving 100%, I can go to sleep KNOWING I have done my best.

Kevin Windham out for remainder of Supercross season
GEICO Honda rider Kevin Windham will miss the rest of the Supercross season after suffering several injuries during a crash Saturday in Houston.
Attempting to qualify for the Main event, Windham was in a pitched battle with James Stewart during a Heat race when he came off his CRF450 at a high rate of speed. As a result of the accident, Windham dislocated his right shoulder and sustained damage to his left wrist, left thumb and right hip.
"I've definitely got a dislocated shoulder so that ends my season right there," Windham said. "I've had my wrist examined by two doctors; one said it was broken and the other one said it's not. It's very swollen and black and blue so it's hard for them to tell. I'm going to see another specialist (Tuesday) and have an MRI done to see exactly what's up. We just need get it fixed properly.
"I can't move my left thumb at all and my hip hurts. I'm not really sure what's going on with either of them at the moment. I'm basically hurting all over."
The 34-year-old Windham, the oldest competitor on tour, was having another solid season before his accident. He has two podium finishes to his credit and had been a part of the top five all year.

2nd Annual DC Moto TF Ride Day and Invitational Poker Tournament
Supercross 2011 is right around the corner! So much is going on, both publicly, but also behind the scenes. One public and noteworthy item - DC Shoes has a new three year contract with Monster Energy Supercross!

I was invited to the 2nd Annual DC Moto TF Ride Day and Invitational Poker Tournament at Pala Raceway. It was a full day's 'work' for the DC Athletes; group photos, action shots, interviews, and lots of MX riding at Pala. And there was good game of Poker to raise money for Road 2 Recovery. The list of Athletes sponsored by the DC Shoes brand is a very impressive group making this Supercross assignment unique fun for me!
RJ Says video blog - message for Chad Reed
You probably know of Chad Reed. He's originally from Australia, but has raced primarily here in the USA for over 10 years. He won the 2004 AMA Supercross Series Championship, the 2008 AMA Supercross Series Championship, and the 2009 AMA National Motocross Championship. And before all that, he raced in the World MX GP's.
Chad had a fall at the recent Dallas Supercross. Here is my video message to Chad.

MX Adventures - Supercross Racers go Pink
{jvideo id=254 height=378 width=660 autoPlay=0}
Supercross will undergo a 'Pink' transformation this weekend in Anaheim to show their support and help promote Breast Cancer Awareness, including contributions to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Orange County.
Expect to see a lot of masculine Supercross guys wearing pink riding gear, or somehow sporting the color to show their support for this great cause. Also it is a Valentines weekend, so many of the guys are getting all kinds of lady love ...

WMX Rider Insight: Vicki Golden's 2010 Season Review
When Vicki Golden turned pro in 2009, she went into the season open minded; she just wanted to see how she'd do in the Pros. It worked out pretty well for Vicki as she consistently finished in the top 4 in the first 5 rounds of the 2009 WMX season. After a season ending injury to Trey Canard, Geico Honda gave Vicki an opportunity to ride Trey's bike the remainder of the season of the Women's Motocross Series. It was a great experience as she finished 4th in Colorado, but her season ended prematurely as she injured herself in a practice session at Perris Raceway before the 6th round in Washougal.
In 2010 Vicki came back healthy and was picked up by Moto Concepts Yamaha. She wasn’t as consistent as she expected, but she did finish the season 4th overall points, with a 3rd place finish at the Pala Raceway National. In 2011 she will be running the #4 plate in the AMA Women's Motocross Series.

Vicki got back from Geneva, Switzerland a few weeks ago where she participated in a women’s supercross exhibition race with some pretty stiff competition.

Behind the scenes: Team USA for 2010 Motocross of Nations - together for the first time
I was back out at Pala Raceway for something very special. I had already been there for four days for the Finale of the 2010 AMA MX season and the Awards Banquet.
But, as I mentioned, this was something special - the first official get together of Team USA for the 2010 Motocross of Nations. Team Manager Roger De Coster, racers Ryan Dungey, Andrew Short, Trey Canard, and all the support staff needed for an effort like this.

I felt very privileged to be invited to such an event. I soon came to realize that the most unique and moving part of the day was seeing the look of real happiness, the feeling of true honor, and the comraderie for each person involved, as 'The Team' came together for the first time. It was contagious. They seem to be a real 'team' already, working together well, and have great things to say about each other. Again, it was contagious!

The 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship Season Celebration
This year's AMA Motocross Banquet & Season Celebration was held in a magnificent banquet room at the Pala Resort & Casino. The room was decorated beautifully, lined with motocross décor, as well as a stage decorated with the championship bikes and awards. The line-up of food, appetizers, desserts, and beverages was very elegant and delicious.
After dinner, the awards ceremony began. Jason Weigandt, along with Tim Cotter hosted the show. And of course Jason started it just like he does many of his shows - after slamming down an energy drink.
Jason went on to talk about each round of this summer's AMA Motocross Nationals, with a list of funny jokes pertaining to all the good and bad situations at each of the races. After that, the awards and trophies were handed out.
The night was filled with special memories, good times, and laughs. One poignant moment was when Kevin Windham accepted the award for 'Sportsperson of the Year'. Kevin always has a great way of expressing himself, but made a great comment towards his friend & the team manager, Mike LaRocco. He commented on Mike's motivation, that pushed Kevin to work hard and do his best ... it was touching, but at the same time very funny.
