Headshake Solutions

When I first started riding big bikes, I was so stoked to finally have all of the power I wanted.  However, with great power, comes great responsibility…courtesy of Uncle Ben from Spiderman.  Sometimes, we can get ahead of ourselves on a rougher track and the braking bumps fight back.  Most of the time, the chop and speed result in head shake.  This uncontrollable shaking can be thwarted with a few adjustments.

One of the most common reasons for head shake is fatigue.  When you are fatigued, your form goes out the window and it gets worse as the moto progresses.  Your elbows drop and you cannot get enough leverage to keep the bars straight.  As you get more and more head shake, you begin to grip harder with your hands and the forearms pump up to bricks.  Sound about right?  When your upper body feels like rubber, the need to grip with your legs becomes even greater.  Again, the quadriceps and hamstrings are a much larger muscle group that can support greater loads of stress for longer periods of times.  Start the moto out with a conscience effort of using your legs more than your arms and you will be better off.

Another problem is RPM range.  The relationship between the motor and suspension is pretty crazy when you really think about it.  When you hear pros run through whoops and moguls, they are running a higher gear.  The RPMs are lower and take some of the load off of the forks and shock.  They travel smoother and won’t bind, which gives you that bouncing effect through the rough stuff.  If you shift down AFTER the braking bumps, you allow your suspension to ride with you, instead of against you.  The forks will travel through the entire stroke and do their job; soak up the terrain.

Weight distribution is also important.  Maintaining your attack position through the rough chop will help keep your elbows up and in good form.  This attack position will place your weight evenly over the bike, allowing you to make changes if need be.  As I have said before, riding on the balls of your feet will give you some extra “suspension” and forces you to grip the bike with your legs.

By throwing good form and the right gear together, head shake will be a thing of the past.  Of course, making sure your sag is set on the shock and your clickers are dialed is important, but the rider can make a big difference.  As always, remember the basics and keep it fun.

RJ Says video blog - message for Chad Reed

You probably know of Chad Reed. He's originally from Australia, but has raced primarily here in the USA for over 10 years. He won the 2004 AMA Supercross Series Championship, the 2008 AMA Supercross Series Championship, and the 2009 AMA National Motocross Championship. And before all that, he raced in the World MX GP's.

Chad had a fall at the recent Dallas Supercross. Here is my video message to Chad.

Spain's Women take title for third year in a row

Spain's three-rider team consisting of Laia Sanz – Gas Gas, Sandra Gomez – Gas Gas and Mireia Conde – Beta clinched victory for the third year in a row at the FIM Women's Trial des Nations, this time hosted in Moutier, Switzerland. This latest win sees Spain take their tally to six titles since the female category was added to the annual team competition back in 2000. Once again Spain endured a day-long battle with their close rivals Great Britain who eventually ended the event as runners-up also for the third year in succession. Like twelve months ago Spain's winning margin was a mere five marks after two laps of fierce competition. France completed the podium places ten marks further back, with the best two scores in each section by the three riders counting towards the final team total. The British squad of Emma Bristow – Ossa, Rebekah Cook – Beta and Donna Fox – Beta kept the reigning champions under pressure right until the final man-made section back in the start / finish hall where a large crowd had gathered to witness this tense conclusion. Britain started the Trial as perhaps the slight favourites based on their recent individual performances, and the fact that further rain had made conditions in the hazards more to their liking than their southern European counterparts. Despite these circumstances and much thanks to Sanz's absolute superiority, Spain opened up a healthy advantage as the first lap developed. However this was all but destroyed as they failed in the penultimate hazard, and went into the second lap with just a two-mark lead over Great Britain. As on the opening lap the fifth section proved to be decisive as Spain saw one of their riders reach the ends cards to record a total of eight (five plus three), as opposed to Britain who racked up a maximum ten marks (five plus five) as they had done the lap before when Spain had dropped only six (five plus one) in the same hazard. From that point on Spain rode with renewed confidence and maintained their advantage right to the finish to make it a hat-trick of victories for the young Spanish squad. With Great Britain once again having to settle for second spot, it was France who were a surprise addition to the podium as they edged out the more fancied German team. The French trio of Marilyne Journet – Beta, Sandrine Juffet – JTG and Pauline Masanes – Gas Gas produced two strong laps to beat the German line up of Theresa Bauml – Gas Gas, Ina Wilde – Sherco and Jessica Wulf – Beta by seven marks come the finish. The American team represented by Caroline Allen – Gas Gas, Louise Forsley – Sherco and Rachel Hassler – Gas Gas recorded a well deserved fifth position only five marks behind Germany to make their long trip over to Europe very worthwhile. In the wet and muddy conditions, which were added to by several heavy showers throughout the day, it was the Italian squad of Martina Balducchi – Scorpa, Elisa Peretti – Gas Gas and Sara Trentini - Beta who seemed to suffer the most. Fifth at their home event last year, on paper Italy looked like they had the potential to move higher up the order this time out, however they simply failed to perform to their full potential on the day. Norway, Australia, Sweden and Portugal completed the top ten respectively, with the host nation of Switzerland grabbing eleventh spot as they entered a Women's team for the very first time.Tomorrow will see the attention shift to male competitors, as Moutier hosts the 2012 FIM Trial des Nations.

Maiden pole for Folger

The Moto3™ grid was greeted by a continually drying track for qualifying at the Gran Premio Iveco de Aragón where it was Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3's Jonas Folger who stormed to his maiden GP pole position ahead of Luis Salom and Sandro Cortese. Under threatening skies but a track that was almost fully dry by the end of the session it was Folger's time of 2.01'715 that saw him take his first ever Grand Prix pole position, with RW Racing GP's injured Salom less than two tenths behind him in second. There had been concerns that Salom may not be able to contest qualifying after a crash this morning, yet he was declared fit despite a very sore shoulder. Red Bull KTM Ajo's Sandro Cortese completes the front row in third, as the German was unable to match his compatriots pace in the final stages. Team Italia FMI's Romano Fenati heads the second row in fourth, having had a terrific session at the Spanish track, ending the afternoon just under five-tenths off the top. Lining up next to him in fifth is Cortese's teammate Danny Kent, whilst the final spot on the row belongs to Blusens Avintia's championship pursuer Maverick Viñales. Viñales had been lingering further back in the field when the track was damp at the start, yet soon made his way up once conditions improved. In seventh, AirAsia-SIC-Ajo's Zulfahmi Khairuddin was unable to repeat his top spot from this morning, but will no doubt be pleased with his performance. Next to him in eighth, JHK t-shirt Laglisse's Efrén Vázquez looked as if he might make it onto the second row in the latter stages, yet was unable to match the pace in the final laps. Yesterday's pace-setter, Estrella Galicia 0,0's Miguel Oliveira completes the third row, with his teammate Alex Rins rounding out the top ten.

Interview: AMA Women's Motocross Champion Jessica Patterson

Jessica Patterson is the 2010 AMA Women's National Motocross Champion. Here is Supercross.com's latest interview with JP$.

Jessica, congratulations on your 2010 AMA Women's National MX Championship. You walked away with some amazing trophies from this summer's race wins .... where do you put all those great awards, and what does it mean to you when you see them?

Thanks Annj. I usually go straight to my parents house and drop them all off and let my mom decorate the house with them. But recently she told me that I have started to bring home too many, and to figure out where to put them at my place because her place is now full.

Her suggestion to me was to rent a storage unit if I didn’t want to keep them all over the house. They are all just hanging out at her house right now, and eventually when I decide where I want to move, then I will take them with me and start the decorating.

To see the trophies is pretty cool. It is what I have been working so hard for, and after struggling for for two years and now coming back and winning the championship in 2010, it makes it that much better. Seeing that I have all those number 1 trophies from each race except for two, it reminds me of how good of a year it really was, so it makes me really happy and makes me want to keep pushing.

Flashback - 2011 Motocross of Nations in France - Team USA wins

The 2012 Motocross of Nations is coming the weekend of September 29 and 30 in Lommel, Belgium. Here is a look back at last year's event in France ...

Team USA has won the 2011 Motocross of Nations here in St. Jean d'Angely, France. With the win in this 65th edition of the MX of Nations, Team USA riders Ryan Dungey, Blake Baggett, and Ryan Villopoto, along with team manger Roger De Coster, take home the coveted Chamberlain Trophy.

Team France finished second, with team members Christophe Pourcel, Marvin Musquin, and Gautier Paulin. Australia finished third with Reed, Metcalfe and Moss.

The French fans turned out in huge numbers, and were very enthusiastic for their riders. The track was very difficult, with lots of steep climbs and lots of stones underneath the top soil. Combine the stones with some rain at times, which made the track slick, many riders had vision and goggle problems during the day.

Champagne time for USA, France, and Australia at the 2011 Motocross of Nations in France!

R4TC: 2010 Ride for the Cure at Cahuilla Motocross Park

I haven't hit the track much in 2010, but knowing that the 4th Annual Motocross Ride for the Cure Event was coming, I dusted off the KTM, dropped it off at Malcolm Motorsports for some fine tuning, hit Milestone Motocross Track for a handful of warm ups and I was ready to enjoy the funnest event of the year hosted by motocross enthusiast herself, Laurie Carey, who is constantly raising the bar for fundraising, support, education and interaction for Breast Cancer Awareness!

The morning started off amazing, perfect day to moto! The sky's were bright blue and littered with dark fluffy rain clouds! Dropping rain in perfect track watering patterns, the day was in full swing and the pits were packed! Tons of Factory support lined up for the event, they even had a never ending Freestyle show in the works! Mike Metzger, the God Father of FMX was doing his thing and dozens of other talented riders busting out tricks for the fans.

I pretty much settled into a pack rat of MXGirls, WMA Pro Rider Elizabeth Bash, Race Techs Michelle Marshall, and Mission Motorsports Brooklyn McClendon. We had a blast mixing it up on the main and vet tracks, sporting our decorated "Ride for the Cure" Bra's and having a blast spinning laps, saving boobies!

In the end I was amazed at the growth this event has accumulated over the years, by far the most impressive outcome I've seen. I'm looking forward to next year's event, but more importantly, it's touching to see all the work Laurie Carey puts into the Support and Awareness of Breast Cancer.

Monster Energy Cup live on SPEED

Feld Motor Sports has announced that SPEED will broadcast the second annual Monster Energy Cup live from Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium on October 20 at 7:00 p.m. PST.

SPEED will deliver 3.5 hours of live television coverage to the fans at home. Host Ralph Sheheen, a 24-year veteran motorsports broadcaster, and color analyst Jeff Emig, a three-time AMA Champion, will man the booth along with special guest Ricky Carmichael, a 15-time AMA National Champion, and pit reporter Erin Bates will capture all of the behind-the-scenes action.

“Ryan Villopoto turned the Monster Energy Cup into an instant classic when he swept the Main Events to pocket $1 million in last year’s inaugural event on SPEED,” said network President Scott Ackerson. “Any time you’re talking about that kind of money, that kind of energy and that kind of action, it makes for a fantastic program for the SPEED audience.”

“With an expected packed house at Sam Boyd Stadium for the live event, fans from around the world will be able to watch this epic battle unfold live on SPEED,” said Ken Hudgens, COO, Feld Motor Sports. “This year’s starting gate will be stacked full of the top Supercross and Supercross Lites Class riders.”

The 2012 Monster Energy Cup features an all-new track design inspired by five-time Supercross Class Champion Ricky Carmichael. The Carmichael-inspired track design will consist of supercross and motocross obstacles unlike any other racetrack design in the world. New to this year’s track will be a 200’ banked sweeping turn that will be built in the stands, two 11 rider starting gates split by 220’ before they converge at the apex of the 300’ start straight and the joker lane that riders will have to race through at least once during laps 2-10. After racing through these sections of the track, fans will be treated to equally exciting racing lanes that are built into the Monster Energy Fan Zone, which is located outside of the stadium. The Monster Energy Cup posts a $250,000 purse with the winner walking away with a $100,000 check, and any rider that wins all three Main Events will take home $1 million.

Lommel to host the 2012 Monster Energy FIM MXoN

Everything is ready in the Belgian track of Lommel to host the 66th edition of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, where team USA will give it all to add one more victory to their seventh winning streak. However, the Americans will have to fight hard against one of the toughest and most demanding sand tracks in the world, where the Belgian riders and many Europeans are very good at. Youthstream's president, Mr Giuseppe Luongo, FIM/CMS Director, Dr Wolfgang Srb, and Mr Eric Geboers, former MXoN Team Belgium rider and head of the organizing committee, will give a warm welcome to all the media present at the event today, and some of the thirty four countries entered to the 66th edition of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations will also be introduced to the media this afternoon. On Saturday all the riders will have the first contact with the track, which has been redesigned for this event, and after the three main heats on Sunday we will find out who conquers the prestigious Chamberlain Trophy this year.On Sunday, the HRH Prince Philippe of Belgium and Duke of Brabant will come to Lommel to see the last and decisive race of the MXoN, and the winning team will have the honour to receive the Chamberlain Trophy by the hands of the Prince Philippe himself. Former Team Belgium rider and current Team USA Manager, Roger De Coster, has been training hard with Ryan Dungey, Bake Baggett and Justin Barcia for more than a week on the sand, and last weekend they had the opportunity to race the MXoN soil of Lommel. Team USA has been the most consistent team for the last decade, and it was actually in Lommel in 1981 where they won their first Chamberlain Trophy from the Belgian Team, who was the favourite for the trophy, so this year they have once again a huge responsibility to be as much consistent as possible to claim what it would be their 23rd Chamberlain Trophy. Team Belgium is among the favourite squads to break the American's winning streak, not only because they race home, but also because they are all sand specialist and they have all finished among the top five in the FIM Motocross World Championship. Clement Desalle, who is almost fully recovered from his hand injury, will represent his country in the MX1 class, whereas Jeremy Van Horebeek, who showed an amazing form during the sand MXGP of Benelux in Lierop some weeks ago, will represent Belgium in MX2. Ken De Dycker, who finished second behind Cairoli in Lierop, will be the Open class rider. In fact, it was actually this Dutch track of Lierop the one that saw Team Belgium obtain their last Chamberlain trophy back in 2004, so maybe the home team will be able to make history and win again on the sand. Last year Team France, who was racing home, was on the second step of the podium, but they were really close to beat team USA. Christophe Pourcel was touched by bad luck and his bike stop in the last race and it stopped the team to conquer the Chamberlain Trophy. However, Gautier Paulin, who will represent again his country in the MX1 class, did an amazing performance last year by winning the second heat and finishing eighth in the last one. This year, Paulin will also count with the experience and talent of Marvin Musquin, who will represent France in MX2, and Xavier Boog, who will be the French representative in the Open class. The third step of the podium last year was for Team Australia, thanks to the outstanding performances of Chad Reed and Brett Metcalfe. Reed got injured during the season and he is not at his 100%, so team manager Gary Benn had to select a completely new team. Lawson Bopping will represent the colours of his country in the MX1 class, while Luke Styke and Todd Waters will represent Australia in the MX2 and the Open class respectively. Another team who has many chances to be fighting for the top three positions is Team Great Britain, whose last podium was back in 1997 in Nismes, Belgium. Tommy Searle will be representing the colours of the Union Flag in the MX1 class, while Jake Nicholls will try to finish among the top five riders as he did during the season in the MX2 class. For Max Ansitie it will be the first time for him to take part at the MXoN and he will do it on a 450 Honda machine. Hubert Nagl, Germany's team manager, has selected the same team that was on the third step of the podium in the 2010 FIM Motocross of Nations, which took place in Lakewood, USA. However, the tactic will be different, as Max Nagl will be racing the MX1 class, instead of the Open class, which will be represented by Marcus Schiffer. The former 2012 MX2 Champion Ken Roczen will represent Germany in the MX2 class and he will do his best to finish in front of the 450cc bikes to give his country as many possibilities as possible to finish on the podium. The Dutch rider Jeffrey Herlings is known everywhere in the world as the fastest man on the sand, but this weekend he will have to prove his talent on the 350cc machine. The 2012 FIM MX2 World Champion is determined to win the both motos where he will take part in, and help his teammates Marc De Reuver and Glenn Coldenhoff to put Team The Netherlands as high as possible in the final Nations Classification. The 2012 FIM MX1 World Champion Antonio Cairoli will represent Italy in the MX1 class, while Alessandro Lupino and Davide Guarneri will race in the MX2 and Open class respectively. Team Italy is determined to stop their bad luck streak and improve their last year's sixteenth position. For the six-times world champion Cairoli Lommel is like his second home track, so he will be fully focus to win both heats. In fact, everybody is looking forward to watching Cairoli and Herlings racing together and seeing who will be the one claiming the final heat victory. Team Austria will enter the 2012 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations counting with the current FIM MX3 World Champion, who will be leading the team in the Open class. Marco Schögler and Lukas Neurauter will represent the MX1 and MX2 class respectively. Despite a wet start France maintain ISDE dominance on day four in Germany

Day 4: At the end of a wet and muddy day of racing at the FIM International Six Days Enduro (ISDE), France maintain their place as the outright fastest nation in the event. Leading the FIM World Trophy competition, FIM Junior World Trophy class and the Women's World Trophy classifications, they remain very much the nation to beat. After day four of the FIM ISDE the position at the top of the standings remain unchanged as France continue to lead the FIM World Trophy team competition. Delivering yet another dominant display of riding the French team made light work of the wet and muddy terrain to extend their lead in the event. With Christophe Nambotin – KTM posting the fastest time of the day, the French squad increase their advantage to thirty-two minutes over Australia. Although hampered by injuries to both Glenn Kearney – Husqvarna and Toby Price – KTM, Australia still maintain a comfortable lead over Italy. Lead by Husqvarna mounted Alex Salvini, Italy stay third in the overall standings with just two days remaining. By ending day four in fifth place in the individual overall standings, Eero Remes – KTM helped Finland to regain control of fourth place and pushed Spain back into fifth. Spain now trail Finland by one- minute and nineteen seconds. In the FIM Junior World Trophy team event, France continue to hold onto the lead. However, at the end of a tough day of racing they were only able to increase their advantage over Great Britain by twenty-four seconds. With two days left in the FIM ISDE the margin between the two leading nations remains tight with Great Britain trailing France by only one-minute and fifty-two seconds. Day four saw another solid USA performance as they held onto their third place position. With Australia in fourth, Portugal completed the top five positions after four days of racing. In the FIM Women's World Trophy competition, France look all but assured of victory with only two days of racing remaining. Again setting the fastest time of the day, France now lead Germany by almost one hour and forty minutes. After the fourth day of competition the battle for second place saw Germany move ahead of Australia. Clearly enjoying the muddier and more technical conditions that competitors faced on day four, Germany moved into second position, sixteen minutes ahead of their nearest rivals. In the Enduro 1 class France's Antoine Meo - KTM topped the classification at the end of day four to extend his lead to four minutes over Finland's Eero Remes – KTM. With Remes in second position, France's Rodrig Thain - Honda completes the top three. Grabbing the Enduro 2 category win on day four France's Johnny Aubert – KTM took control of the class lead and now heads Husaberg's Pela Renet by seventeen seconds. Italy's Alex Salvini - Husqvarna rounded out the top three. Placing as the fastest rider in the individual overall classification, Nambotin saw his lead in the Enduro 3 class grow to over seven minutes ahead of Australia's Toby Price while Sweden's Joakim Ljunggren – Husaberg trails Price less than forty seconds.Live and full event results can be found at www.fim-isde-live.info

Nick de Wit Monthly Report

Another month has come and gone and its been no different event wise. It started off with me packing my bags and heading back to Dubai for another round of the Red Bull X-Fighters teasers tour. I had to do two media events over there but unfortunately, Due to the unrest in some of the other Arab countries we had to cancel the first show in Dubai. Our second one was in Abu Dhabi. We managed to do that one and it turned out to be really cool. The wind held out well for us and the spectators really enjoyed it. After that one I headed back home to get ready for my next event. It was the top Gear festival at Kyalami in JHB.

The Scrub

Watching the pros, you can guarantee that every rider is going to scrub.  Even amateurs are perfecting the “Bubba Scrub.”  This is not just something they do for fun.  This is a technique that can help you stay lower in the air and get back on Mother Earth and on the gas.  If you see someone perform the scrub right, it looks effortless and so smooth.  It really is an art form as no 2 scrubs are alike.  For this reason, it is important to start things slow and on a single or something small; eventually working your way up to normal size jumps.

The first thing is to approach the face at a slight angle.  If you plan on leaning to the right, you want to angle yourself to be pointing slightly to the left.  This allows you to turn the bars and lean the bike without scrubbing off of the track.  As the front wheel comes off of the lip, you want to begin to turn the bars the same way you are leaning.  You don’t want to try and make this like a turn.  That will only throw the rear end out and you will still be upright, defeating the whole purpose of this.  Keep this in mind and just lean.  As I said before, this is a unique technique, so it you prefer to stand, stand up.  If you like to sit down, have a seat.

Once you feel you are off of the jump, you want to keep turning the bars down.  This gets the motion of the whip going.  You really want to try and pivot and squeeze with your legs.  This is not just a movement with your arms; you want to help the bike through the flow with your hips and legs.  As you approach the peak of your flight, you will start to feel a point where you need to bring it back.  I have not brought it back in time and I can tell you, it hurts.

You will feel the bike want to come back to its normal, upright position.  To get this process going, simply turn the bars back the other way.  Combine this with a little bit of gas (to get the rear wheel spinning) and the centripetal motion of the wheels will get you back to the right position.  Don’t forget that apply pressure on the foot pegs so you can help bring the bike back with your legs.

When you get the bike straight, be sure to get on the gas.  This will help you drive through any swaps or any problems you have with the scrub when you land.  Like I said, this is a one of kind technique.  You need to practice this and start small.  Jumps that are slower and have long faces will help you out a lot and when you feel comfortable enough, transition to faster, shorter jump faces.  Everything should be a fluid, smooth motion.  It will come faster than you think and you will be throwing scrubs like James himself.

Effective Braking for Faster Cornering

Everyone can go fast by hold the throttle pinned on the straights, but it’s when it comes time to slow down that separates the pros from the amateurs.  Next time you are at your local track, watch the fast guys around the track; they are either on the gas or braking.  Slower riders tend to have a bad habit of letting off before the corner and then braking.  However, teaching yourself to hold it on longer isn’t enough.  Learning how and when to use both brakes effectively will help take your corner speed to the next level.

Telling yourself to hold the gas on a split second longer is easier said than done, but it can be a life saver on the start.  Unlike road racing, there are no markers to tell us how close the corner is.  However, we can use simple objects like rocks, fencing or foliage.  Finding a marker can help you visualize your spot on the track and help you hold the throttle down longer.

Many people have their own theory on how to brake properly.  Some prefer just the front while others like the back.  I believe that there is no definite answer.  Each brake has different purposes.  The front brake is great for diving into inside ruts and coming to a stop quickly, while the rear keeps the rear wheel planted to the ground and keeps your momentum up.  Another interesting thing that seems to help me is to “push” the bike in the ground.  Trying to weight front or rear down will put more force on the ground to get that extra friction for added stopping power.

One thing that aids in your momentum and drive is to avoid locking the brakes.  When you lock up the rear brake, there is no control over the traction and where the wheel goes.  All of your RPMs drop and it just creates braking bumps even faster.  Your best bet is to “chatter” the rear.  This is a method where the rear wheel is spinning, but at a much slower rate.  This is great for maintaining drive in deep soil and it squats the rear end down to avoid swapping out.

Each situation is different, but remembering how your brakes control deceleration, you can utilize each one to its maximum potential.  If you have an outside line in a corner that looks good, use more rear brake than front.  For insides, you would be better off grabbing the front and getting that front end down.  Becoming comfortable with both brakes can allow you to have faster entry speed in any corner.

Ski Jumps

The best thing about riding a motocross track is the elevation change.  This gives you more dimensions to the track and allows you to “spice up” some obstacles.  One of these obstacles is the ski jumps.  Most of the time, you find these jumps right before a downhill and there is no real lip or face.  This sort of jump can be used to your advantage, if you do it correctly.

The most important part of this type of jump is approach.  You want to be in the attack position so you are ready for the upcoming drop.  Depending on the situation, there could be a lot of braking bumps, and being in the attack position really helps you get through the bumps without the bike dancing underneath of you.  Don’t forget to grip with the knees and look ahead.

As you are about to make the drop, you want to be slightly leaning back.  If you are leaning to far forward, your front end is going to drop because there is no lip to give you that “pop” and raise the front wheel.  It also helps to be on the gas, if possible.  If it’s not, stay in a higher gear so the engine braking doesn’t drag the front down.

As you leave the ground and make the descent, you want to make sure your front tire is slightly higher than the rear.  When landing down a hill, you don’t want to land front wheel first.  This throws a lot of your weight and momentum to the front wheel and you have a greater chance of going over the bars.  So, land rear wheel first and be on the gas.  Most down hills are going to be rough; so, getting on the gas when you land gives you forward momentum through the rough stuff.  It helps to jump a little further than everyone too.  This isn’t normally the case with average jumps, but in this case, when you jump further, you keep your speed and momentum up.  Plus, you have a chance to jump past the slower riders’ bumps.  These jumps are usually low visibility, so make sure you know what the next obstacle is or you could end up like Doug Henry (i.e. broken back).

Go Pro Moto – QLD Moto Park MX1 Motocross

Some footage from my Go Pro Moto helmet cam. Riding a CRF450 on motocross track 1 at Queensland Moto Park. The track is rutted and has the normal braking and acceleration bumps as it doesn’t seem to be prepped that often. Like track two it has a handful of table tops but with a mix of tight and wide corners and short straights.

Overall the track is not bad considering what off road riding parks are available in Queensland.

Nick de Wit Switching Summers

Nick de Wit is one of the most down to Earth riders that you will ever meet. He’s always motivated to go out and get a good ride and you will never see him slacking a job needed to be done. In 2004, he was the first FMX rider out of South Africa to compete in international competitions. Since then, he has been to many prestigious events from X-Games to Red Bull X-Fighters and ridden on locations that you only see on postcards. Nick has spent a bit of time back at home for the South African summer. We catch up with him as our 2011 season starts to get some high voltage.

On September 13th 2012, Kawasaki did something monumental. They rented out Times Square in New York City all day to release their newest Ninja motorcycle. They had stunt riders doing tricks in the middle of Times Square all day long and brought out the Kawasaki Team Green riders to sign autographs and make some big announcements. At the end of the night Kawasaki donated two of the new Ninja’s to a charity called City Harvest, the bikes will be auctioned off for their “Bid Against Hunger” event on October 16th. They also gave away two Ninjas to two lucky winners. So yes, “Kawasaki is doing it big!”.

France's Renet takes early overall lead

When it comes to debut performances at the FIM International Six Days Enduro few have come close to delivering a result as impressive as France's World Trophy team rider Pela Renet. Never before competing in the ISDE prior to this year's event the current FIM Enduro 2 World Championship leader made light work of the opening day's special tests in Germany and topped the overall results by ten seconds.Faced with six long and demanding special tests Renet kept his cool to end the day as the fastest outright performer, playing an important role in helping France establish a commanding lead in the FIM World Trophy category."It was a very good day for me," explained the reserved, but pleased Renet after impounding his bike in parc fermé. "The first day is always important at the ISDE. I hope that I can continue as I have started, but there is a long way to go before we get to the end of the race. The enduro tests were very technical, there were lots of tree roots in the forest, so you had to be a little cautious in places. I'm pleased I got a good result for the French team."Communication G2F Media - www.g2fmedia.com -

Who dat?

This week I caught up with Kevin Windham. In the video below, Kevin Windham talks about the Superbowl Champions, the NFL's New Orleans Saints, his family, his future plans for racing and beyond.

The Superbowl XLIV champions, the New Orleans Saints, have many fans - among them is none other than the number 14 in Supercross, Kevin Windham. While the NFL season started when Supercross was in its off season, Kevin was able to take part in season tickets to his favorite NFL team - da' Saints. Eventually the 2010 Supercross season got underway in January, which meant Kevin was flying off after those Saturday night Main Events back East to watch the New Orleans Saints Playoff games.

On February 7, 2010 the New Orleans Saints headed to the Superbowl in Miami, Florida and Kevin Windham and his wife Dottie made arrangements to attend this momentous occasion. First, however Kevin had to finish up a Supercross race in San Diego the night before.
