Interview: AMA Women's Motocross Champion Jessica Patterson

Jessica Patterson is the 2010 AMA Women's National Motocross Champion. Here is Supercross.com's latest interview with JP$.

Jessica, congratulations on your 2010 AMA Women's National MX Championship. You walked away with some amazing trophies from this summer's race wins .... where do you put all those great awards, and what does it mean to you when you see them?

Thanks Annj. I usually go straight to my parents house and drop them all off and let my mom decorate the house with them. But recently she told me that I have started to bring home too many, and to figure out where to put them at my place because her place is now full.

Her suggestion to me was to rent a storage unit if I didn’t want to keep them all over the house. They are all just hanging out at her house right now, and eventually when I decide where I want to move, then I will take them with me and start the decorating.

To see the trophies is pretty cool. It is what I have been working so hard for, and after struggling for for two years and now coming back and winning the championship in 2010, it makes it that much better. Seeing that I have all those number 1 trophies from each race except for two, it reminds me of how good of a year it really was, so it makes me really happy and makes me want to keep pushing.

2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, an FIM World Championship - LA Recap, Oakland Preview

We are now three rounds deep into the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross Series, and things are beginning to heat up. Last weekend in Los Angeles, two riders rode off with solid wins - Chad Reed in the premiere 450 Supercross class, and Eli Tomac in the 250 Lites West Regional Supercross class.

There was a serious crash involving Trey Canard and Ryan Morais. We will continue to keep you updated as to their health status whenever we receive updates. Both Rick Johnson and Jeremy McGrath in their blogs of this past week commented about the crash:

Rick Johnson / RJ Says blog

Jeremy McGrath / King's Korner blog

Chad Reed took his first win of the season in the Supercross class, while Eli Tomac did the same in Lites racing. But the way the two riders accomplished their feats was completely different.

In the initial gate drop for the 450 Supercross class, Ryan Dungey grabbed the holeshot, mere inches in front of Defending AMA Monster Energy Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto, but by the second turn, Villopoto had already taken over the lead. Considering his lap times in the heats and practice, the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider looked to be on his way to another runaway victory. But then the red flag came out (because of the crash involved Trey and Ryan) which forced a restart. Before you continue below

RJ Says: 1985 LA Coliseum Supercross video - part 1

Where supercross started - the fabled Los Angeles Coliseum in 1972. This video is from 1985 at the L. A. Coliseum Supercross.

This video is part 1 of 2. I wanted to get it up for you as quickly as possible. In this video, for better or worse, you'll see a lot of me (I'm number 5 on a Yamaha). But in the second video that's coming, you'll see a lot more of my friends in the race like David Bailey, Bob Hannah, Jeff Ward, Goat Breker, Broc Glover, Ron Lechien, Johnny O'Mara, and others.

I think in 1985, we ran two 'main events' at each supercross. Part of what you see here (if my memory is correct) is me winning the first 'main event'.

And stay tuned for the second video! Both videos have the fabled Peristyle uphill / downhill. And especially in the second video coming late next week, with guys like Jeff Ward, David Bailey, Bob Hannah, Broc Glover, Ron Lechien, Johnny O'Mara and myself - you'll see riders with about 33 AMA Supercross and Motocross titles combined!

Hope you enjoy the videos ...

A few months later, all the top racers ran 100%: Bailey, O'mara, Ward, Glover, Lechien, Kehoe, Holley, and the list goes on.

From that point on 100% has been my life motto. I am giving 100% in whatever I do. Truck racing, coaching, working or loving my family. Win or lose. Happy or sad.

R4TC: 2010 Ride for the Cure at Cahuilla Motocross Park

I haven't hit the track much in 2010, but knowing that the 4th Annual Motocross Ride for the Cure Event was coming, I dusted off the KTM, dropped it off at Malcolm Motorsports for some fine tuning, hit Milestone Motocross Track for a handful of warm ups and I was ready to enjoy the funnest event of the year hosted by motocross enthusiast herself, Laurie Carey, who is constantly raising the bar for fundraising, support, education and interaction for Breast Cancer Awareness!

The morning started off amazing, perfect day to moto! The sky's were bright blue and littered with dark fluffy rain clouds! Dropping rain in perfect track watering patterns, the day was in full swing and the pits were packed! Tons of Factory support lined up for the event, they even had a never ending Freestyle show in the works! Mike Metzger, the God Father of FMX was doing his thing and dozens of other talented riders busting out tricks for the fans.

I pretty much settled into a pack rat of MXGirls, WMA Pro Rider Elizabeth Bash, Race Techs Michelle Marshall, and Mission Motorsports Brooklyn McClendon. We had a blast mixing it up on the main and vet tracks, sporting our decorated "Ride for the Cure" Bra's and having a blast spinning laps, saving boobies!

In the end I was amazed at the growth this event has accumulated over the years, by far the most impressive outcome I've seen. I'm looking forward to next year's event, but more importantly, it's touching to see all the work Laurie Carey puts into the Support and Awareness of Breast Cancer.

2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, an FIM World Championship - Dallas Recap, Atlanta Preview

Updated 4:30pm Pacfic Time, Friday February 24: Last week may have marked the biggest change so far in the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series. Not only did Ryan Villopoto ride away with his third win in a row, but his closest competitor, Chad Reed, crashed out of the race and the series.

The Dallas Supercross 20 lap main event was shaping up to be one of the best of the season. Villopoto and Reed both had great starts and were in first and second by the end of the first lap. As the laps clicked off something became apparent: Reed was riding faster than Villopoto. With the race nearing the halfway point, Reed looked poised to set-up a pass. Making up fractions of a second per lap, Reed was soon right on Villopoto’s rear wheel and the number 22 Honda seemed to be aware of the sections in which he was quicker. Heading into the sand section, where Chad had been making up time, the two riders were very close to one another, and then something went wrong.

Chad had been one of the only riders tripling into the section, but this time around, his bike did not level out in the air as it should have. Instead the front end dove just enough to send Chad and his bike violently to the ground when the front wheel touched down.

Villopoto would go on to to take an unchallenged win. Reed, on the other hand, suffered one of the worst injuries in his professional career: broken ribs, a broken tib/fib, torn ACL, and a broken vertebrae. He will be out for at least the remainder of the Supercross series.

Send Chad Reed a "Get Well" message here

RJ Says: Phoenix Supercross 2012 thoughts, Los Angeles Supercross preview

First off, I want to congratulate KTM, Roger De Coster, and Ryan Dungey for KTM's first Supercross Class main event win. It's huge. I know of all the work they have done in the past few years in developing winning machines, teams, and more. Look at what they did with Stefan Everts and Pit Beirer in developing the 350 SX model - two world championships so far with Antonio Cairoli.

KTM in America has been working on the new 450 that Ryan races. It's a new effort, on a new bike. For Ryan Dungey, his win last Saturday in Phoenix goes a long way in many areas, but I feel the most important is that it adds confidence to the team and Ryan.

World MX GP - American in Europe - Zach Osborne

Monster Energy Yamaha’s Zach Osborne stands on the edge. The American is the sole waver of the Stars and Stripes in the FIM Motocross World Championship and after nearly four years as part of the Grand Prix circus the 22 year old is staring at his last possible chance to lay his hands on an MX2-GP world title. The fact that the Virginian has factory status as part of Yamaha’s six-rider-strong assault on both FIM Motocross World Championship categories in 2012 is further indication that Osborne is on the threshold of something very promising indeed. Two podiums from four appearances in the AMA West Coast Lites Supercross series this January adds to the sense of expectation for the coming months where he is likely to go head-to-head with names such as Herlings, Searle, Van Horebeek and team-mate Arnaud Tonus for the crown.

Thrown in at the deep-end mid-GP season during 2008 for the Utag Yamaha crew (now the Dixon splinter of the Monster Energy Yamaha set-up), foiled by injury in 2009 and partially in 2011, Osborne still managed to pack-in a comprehensive British Championship title in 2010, GP podium results for the last two campaigns and the prestigious Marty Moates Cup at Glen Helen for his home event in 2010 for best performing American. His victory at the Grand Prix of Turkey in 2009 is still a career highlight.

The 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship Season Celebration

This year's AMA Motocross Banquet & Season Celebration was held in a magnificent banquet room at the Pala Resort & Casino. The room was decorated beautifully, lined with motocross décor, as well as a stage decorated with the championship bikes and awards. The line-up of food, appetizers, desserts, and beverages was very elegant and delicious.

After dinner, the awards ceremony began. Jason Weigandt, along with Tim Cotter hosted the show. And of course Jason started it just like he does many of his shows - after slamming down an energy drink.

Jason went on to talk about each round of this summer's AMA Motocross Nationals, with a list of funny jokes pertaining to all the good and bad situations at each of the races. After that, the awards and trophies were handed out.

The night was filled with special memories, good times, and laughs. One poignant moment was when Kevin Windham accepted the award for 'Sportsperson of the Year'. Kevin always has a great way of expressing himself, but made a great comment towards his friend & the team manager, Mike LaRocco. He commented on Mike's motivation, that pushed Kevin to work hard and do his best ... it was touching, but at the same time very funny.

Ricky Carmichael Signature Design Unveiled For 2012 Daytona Supercross By Honda Course

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - For the fifth-straight year, legendary Supercross champion Ricky Carmichael will challenge riders with his latest signature course design in the 2012 Daytona Supercross By Honda scheduled for Saturday night, March 10, the only AMA Supercross event in Florida this year.

“It’s an honor and a pleasure to design the course for Daytona, where there is so much racing history involved,” said Carmichael, who owns a record five Daytona Supercross By Honda victories. “The fans are great, and there is a great group of people working at Daytona International Speedway.  I’m flattered that they continue to want me to keep coming back to design their race course.  It’s a pretty cool deal.”

The Ricky Carmichael Signature Design course will draw some parallels to last year’s layout with the placement of the starting gate remaining on pit road and providing fans with a great view of the first turn. It will feature slight changes in the course’s configuration, particularly in the corners.

RJ Says: Moving to Pro 4 Off-Road Truck Racing in 2011

Last year I won the TORC Pro 2 Off-Road Truck racing championship. This year I'm moving to the Pro 4 class.

What's the difference between Pro 2 and Pro 4? Pro 2 is two wheel drive. Pro 4 is four wheel drive.

With Pro 4 you can drive more aggressively - you can get on the gas more, because you have much more traction with all four wheels.

DC Moto TF Ride Day with Josh Hill

In the 2010 AMA Supercross Championship series, Josh Hill consistently found himself on the podium. He ended the season sixth overall in points, in which he finished second in 5 of the 17 Main Events. In July, Josh spent time preparing for the 'Speed and Style' event for X Games 16. His practice session went from 'landing a backflip on his first attempt' to 'under rotating the next time around.' This horrific crash sent Josh to the hospital with a list of injuries and a whole new respect for the sport of Freestyle Motocross. I caught up with Josh, at Pala Raceway for the DC Moto TF Ride day, where he talked about his rehabilitation, his plans for Supercross 2011, and more!

2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, an FIM World Championship - Oakland Recap, Anaheim 2 Preview

Updated 2:30pm! Last Saturday night, the Oakland round of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series showed that this season may be another one for the ages. James Stewart became the fourth rider in four rounds to win the premier Supercross Class, while Eli Tomac became the first repeat winner of the 250 Lites Class for 2012.

Stewart’s win was his first since April of 2011, and it did not come easily. Off the start, Chad Reed had an excellent jump, grabbed the holsehot and immediately opened a small gap over Andrew Short and Josh Hansen. Stewart, Ryan Villopoto, and Ryan Dungey all had mid pack starts, and spent the first few laps fighting their way through the field in order to battle for the lead. And battle they did.

WMX Rider Insight: Vicki Golden's 2010 Season Review

When Vicki Golden turned pro in 2009, she went into the season open minded; she just wanted to see how she'd do in the Pros. It worked out pretty well for Vicki as she consistently finished in the top 4 in the first 5 rounds of the 2009 WMX season. After a season ending injury to Trey Canard, Geico Honda gave Vicki an opportunity to ride Trey's bike the remainder of the season of the Women's Motocross Series. It was a great experience as she finished 4th in Colorado, but her season ended prematurely as she injured herself in a practice session at Perris Raceway before the 6th round in Washougal.

In 2010 Vicki came back healthy and was picked up by Moto Concepts Yamaha. She wasn’t as consistent as she expected, but she did finish the season 4th overall points, with a 3rd place finish at the Pala Raceway National. In 2011 she will be running the #4 plate in the AMA Women's Motocross Series.

Vicki got back from Geneva, Switzerland a few weeks ago where she participated in a women’s supercross exhibition race with some pretty stiff competition.

Supercross 2011: Kyle Regal discusses move to L & M Racing Yamaha

Moving up from the Lites class to the full time 17 rounds in the premier 450 Supercross class is a big step for any racer. Making it a double whammy, Kyle Regal is also going from Privateer Status to a full Factory Sam Manuel L & M Yamaha ride.

Kyle rode a few 450 Supercross rounds last season, when he wasn’t racing in the Supercross East Coast Lites, but it was this summer Kyle really gained momentum on the 450, finishing ninth in the series final standings.

2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, an FIM World Championship - San Diego Recap, Dallas Preview

Last weekend in San Diego Ryan Villopoto made a definitive statement: the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider is the man to beat in the 2012 AMA Supercross series. Certainly the defending champ has had his stumbles this season already, but he has also shown he is the quickest to rebound from mistakes and bad luck.

At Anaheim I Villopoto trounced the competition, winning by more than ten seconds over Chad Reed. In the following three rounds, however, he had to deal with two first lap crashes in a row, neither being his direct fault. Ryan recovered brilliantly, coming from nearly dead last after the first lap to finish third in Phoenix, and then fourth in Los Angeles. While round four in Oakland marked the return to the top for James Stewart, Villopoto repositioned himself to take command of the last two California rounds at Anaheim II and last weekend in San Diego.

From the start of the main event, Villopoto had the clear lead, while Ryan Dungey, Reed, and Stewart were all further back. With short lap times, the main separator on the track was the long whoop section after the second turn, and this is where Reed and Stewart shined. Both are known for their whoop-de-doo prowess and their speed was clearly faster as they picked off rider after rider. Stewart finally made his move on Reed for second place as the race neared halfway and looked ready to challenge Villopoto for the lead. But disaster struck for Stewart in the whoop section only one lap later, as he went tumbling off the track. James was uninjured, but got entangled in an electronic cable and took a while to remount. By the time he did, he was almost a lap down.

Meanwhile, Reed continued to plug away, gaining tenths of a second at a time until he was within striking distance of Villopoto. On lap 18, Reed made his move, which is when Villopoto showed that he is more than prepared to win. Before the second triple jump, Ryan was a few feet behind, but he scrubbed the jump low enough that by the time the two bikes hit the ground, they were dead even, with Ryan to the inside of Reed as they set up for the right hand bowl turn. One final block pass is all it took for Villopoto to regain control of the lead and eventually take the win.

Ryan is now, for the second time this season, in the points lead as series heads east and his bike will be adorned with the red number plate for Dallas.

Women's AMA Motocross National Championship numbers for 2011 season

Beginning last season, MX Sports Pro Racing implemented a new numbering system for the Women's AMA National Motocross championship. In years past, riders selected their numbers based on availability and order of selection was determined by where a rider finished in the standings the previous season. While the champion was designated to wear the number one plate, all other competitors were permitted to select any number that was available.

The 2010 campaign marked the debut of a new numbering system that determines a rider's number by where she finished the previous season. As a result, one's finishing position in the championship would serve as her number for the following season.

While Women's MX Champion Jessica Patterson will enter 2011 with the #1 plate on her bike, jersey and helmet, below is a list of the remaining numbers for next season's MotorcycleUSA Women's Motocross Championship in accordance to each woman's position in the final standings for 2010:

Mastering Starts

Listen to any pro’s interview and they will always say they need to work on start.  The start is one of the single most important aspects of winning.  If you can holeshot, you just saved yourself a lot of tear offs.  Shawn Simpson (European GP MX2 racer) has once said that “Getting the holeshot is [...]

Ski Jumps

The best thing about riding a motocross track is the elevation change.  This gives you more dimensions to the track and allows you to “spice up” some obstacles.  One of these obstacles is the ski jumps.  Most of the time, you find these jumps right before a downhill and there is no real lip or [...]

Latest info on Trey Canard - January 26

Torrance, CA: Team Honda Muscle Milk rider Trey Canard underwent surgery Tuesday night after sustaining a back injury at Saturday’s Supercross event at Dodger Stadium. The purpose of the procedure was to stabilize the injured area. “The surgery went exactly as planned,” said Trey’s brother Aaron. “He is still in some pain and discomfort but is able to deal with it better and better. He is staying positive and his spirits are up, which is great to see. Depending on how the next few days go, the doctors are hoping he can be released to go home by the end of the weekend.”

WMX Rider Insight: Jackie Ives

In only her second season as a professional Motocross racer, Jackie Ives is currently sitting in 16th position for the WMX point standings through the first four rounds of the 2010 AMA Woman's Motocross Championship Series.

Jackie Ives (17) cheezing on the line at Thunder Valley

You might think 'How cool is it to be racing professional motocross all over the USA!' But it's a lot harder and a lot more work than you might think! Not all racers get the big bucks and the factory rides like James Stewart, Ryan Dungey, and Chad Reed. As a matter of fact, most of the woman racers in the USA have to work quite hard during the week just to make it to the race track!
