RJ Says: Give me a break in between supercross and motocross

Is the combined supercross / motocross season of today's era too long?

As a former supercross and motocross racer, I don't think the season is too long. Racers want to race.

But I would like to see a couple of changes that I think will make it better for the riders, teams, and most importantly, the fans.

First, I'd like to see a much longer break in between the end of the Supercross season, and the start of the MX season.

I think it would be great if the riders could have at least a couple off weekends off after the supercross season ends. One of the reasons is they could do more 'outdoor' testing at that time, instead of during supercross season.

RJ SAYS: Hidden Supercross Treasures

This 2010 Supercross season has gone exactly as no one expected. Everyone figured it was going to be a battle between the same two supercross 'titans' as last season - James Stewart and Chad Reed. Last year after 17 races they were the top two, with James the champion by four points over Chad.

To everyone's surprise, even their own, both are currently not racing - injured. They are watching what is essentially a 450 Supercross 'rookie' have a phenomenal year so far (Ryan Dungey).

A hidden treasure is not Ryan Dungey doing so well. I felt, as many others did, that he would have a great year. Based on the following: he's done well & won on a 450 before this season, all the confidence he had coming into this season from winning two championships in 2009 (the 250 West Lites Supercross, and the 250 AMA Outdoor Motocross) and his tremendous riding on a 450 for Team USA at the recent Motocross des Nations in Italy in October.

In the 250 MX Lites class, Tyla Rattray, not only won, he retains the series points lead as well as the series heads to Colorado this weekend for Round 5.

There are two classes in AMA professional motocross: the 250cc Lites class, and the "Motocross" class, which can run engine sizes from 251cc to 500cc. Most riders race 450cc machines in Motocross, with KTM also having a 350cc machine.

Whoops are one of the toughest objects on a motocross course. WMX Rider Insight: Sayaka Kaneshiro

At the 13th annual 'A Day in the Dirt' I got a chance to talk with Sayaka "Teriyaki Sauce" Kaneshiro, WMX Pro #15

How was your racing today?

It was good, I thought we had a practice first, I went out and it was actually a race. I was just racing and riding around, I felt like ... WOW!

What did you think of the event overall?

It was to difficult racing for me, because I didn't ride my pace. I rode about 6th place, less than I wanted to. I got the same number as last year, I just tried to do my best.

2nd Annual DC Moto TF Ride Day and Invitational Poker Tournament

Supercross 2011 is right around the corner! So much is going on, both publicly, but also behind the scenes. One public and noteworthy item - DC Shoes has a new three year contract with Monster Energy Supercross!

I was invited to the 2nd Annual DC Moto TF Ride Day and Invitational Poker Tournament at Pala Raceway. It was a full day's 'work' for the DC Athletes; group photos, action shots, interviews, and lots of MX riding at Pala. And there was good game of Poker to raise money for Road 2 Recovery. The list of Athletes sponsored by the DC Shoes brand is a very impressive group making this Supercross assignment unique fun for me!

AMA Motocross Round 5 Lakewood, Colorado Preview

The 2011 AMA National Motocross Championship series heads to Thunder Valley MX in Lakewood Colorado for Round 5 this coming Saturday, June 25.

There are three championship battles that will be racing on Saturday - the 450 Motocross class, the 250 MX Lites class, and the Women's class.

In the Motocross class, two-time AMA Supercross Champion Chad Reed, riding the number 22 Honda, is making it look easy, as he's won three of the four rounds to date. He leads Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto, and current AMA Motocross class Champion Ryan Dungey in the point standings.

In the 250 MX Lites class, former MX2 World Motocross Champion Tyla Rattray, riding the number 28 Kawasaki, is leading the series over teammates Dean Wilson and Blake Baggett.

In the Women's class, it seems to be a two way battle between the current and former champion - Jessica Patterson and Ashley Fiolek.

Photos, results, and points from the 450 and 250 men's classes will be here.

WMX Rider Insight: Vicki Golden's 2010 Season Review

When Vicki Golden turned pro in 2009, she went into the season open minded; she just wanted to see how she'd do in the Pros. It worked out pretty well for Vicki as she consistently finished in the top 4 in the first 5 rounds of the 2009 WMX season. After a season ending injury to Trey Canard, Geico Honda gave Vicki an opportunity to ride Trey's bike the remainder of the season of the Women's Motocross Series. It was a great experience as she finished 4th in Colorado, but her season ended prematurely as she injured herself in a practice session at Perris Raceway before the 6th round in Washougal.

In 2010 Vicki came back healthy and was picked up by Moto Concepts Yamaha. She wasn?t as consistent as she expected, but she did finish the season 4th overall points, with a 3rd place finish at the Pala Raceway National. In 2011 she will be running the #4 plate in the AMA Women's Motocross Series.

Vicki got back from Geneva, Switzerland a few weeks ago where she participated in a women?s supercross exhibition race with some pretty stiff competition.

Behind the scenes: Team USA for 2010 Motocross of Nations - together for the first time

I was back out at Pala Raceway for something very special. I had already been there for four days for the Finale of the 2010 AMA MX season and the Awards Banquet.

But, as I mentioned, this was something special - the first official get together of Team USA for the 2010 Motocross of Nations. Team Manager Roger De Coster, racers Ryan Dungey, Andrew Short, Trey Canard, and all the support staff needed for an effort like this.

Ryan Dungey, Roger De Coster, Trey Canard, Andrew Short and Mitch Payton

I felt very privileged to be invited to such an event. I soon came to realize that the most unique and moving part of the day was seeing the look of real happiness, the feeling of true honor, and the comraderie for each person involved, as 'The Team' came together for the first time. It was contagious. They seem to be a real 'team' already, working together well, and have great things to say about each other. Again, it was contagious!

RJ SAYS: Supercross, on four wheels

It was going to be a good idea. Key word being 'was'. It was going to be a good idea!

My idea was to show you what the truck racing series that I promote and race in is like. It's like Supercross, only on four wheels!

So, my plan was simple - I'd invite my good friend Lex out to the finale of the Traxxis TORC series in Las Vegas, we'd mount a camera on the hood of my race truck, and I'd show you just how rough the racing is. It would be me (a former 2 time AMA Supercross Champion) and Jeremy McGrath (best Supercross rider in history!) showing you supercross - on four wheels!

Here is the grand experiment - camera is mounted on my truck's hood. Ready to go. But not for long!

RJ Says: Moving to Pro 4 Off-Road Truck Racing in 2011

Last year I won the TORC Pro 2 Off-Road Truck racing championship. This year I'm moving to the Pro 4 class.

What's the difference between Pro 2 and Pro 4? Pro 2 is two wheel drive. Pro 4 is four wheel drive.

With Pro 4 you can drive more aggressively - you can get on the gas more, because you have much more traction with all four wheels.

Also in 2011, I'm with a new team - Menzies. Plus I have help from Dodge, and Red Bull.

In this video below, this is one of the first times I started testing for 2011. It's a track at Glen Helen Raceway! (Home of the US MX GP)

Courtesy Monster Enery Kawasaki. After a devastating injury during the 2010 AMA Supercross season, Monster Energy Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto was faced with a long recovery to get back to the winning-form he showed last year. But he did what many thought he couldn't and came back in 2011 stronger than ever to win his first AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship at 22 years old. Check out his story in this month's In The Saddle episode.

R4TC: 2010 Ride for the Cure at Cahuilla Motocross Park

I haven't hit the track much in 2010, but knowing that the 4th Annual Motocross Ride for the Cure Event was coming, I dusted off the KTM, dropped it off at Malcolm Motorsports for some fine tuning, hit Milestone Motocross Track for a handful of warm ups and I was ready to enjoy the funnest event of the year hosted by motocross enthusiast herself, Laurie Carey, who is constantly raising the bar for fundraising, support, education and interaction for Breast Cancer Awareness!

The morning started off amazing, perfect day to moto! The sky's were bright blue and littered with dark fluffy rain clouds! Dropping rain in perfect track watering patterns, the day was in full swing and the pits were packed! Tons of Factory support lined up for the event, they even had a never ending Freestyle show in the works! Mike Metzger, the God Father of FMX was doing his thing and dozens of other talented riders busting out tricks for the fans.

I pretty much settled into a pack rat of MXGirls, WMA Pro Rider Elizabeth Bash, Race Techs Michelle Marshall, and Mission Motorsports Brooklyn McClendon. We had a blast mixing it up on the main and vet tracks, sporting our decorated "Ride for the Cure" Bra's and having a blast spinning laps, saving boobies!

In the end I was amazed at the growth this event has accumulated over the years, by far the most impressive outcome I've seen. I'm looking forward to next year's event, but more importantly, it's touching to see all the work Laurie Carey puts into the Support and Awareness of Breast Cancer.

Supercross 2011: Kyle Regal discusses move to L & M Racing Yamaha

Moving up from the Lites class to the full time 17 rounds in the premier 450 Supercross class is a big step for any racer. Making it a double whammy, Kyle Regal is also going from Privateer Status to a full Factory Sam Manuel L & M Yamaha ride.

Kyle rode a few 450 Supercross rounds last season, when he wasn?t racing in the Supercross East Coast Lites, but it was this summer Kyle really gained momentum on the 450, finishing ninth in the series final standings.

Why does my GoPro Hero play back in slow motion using Windows Media Player

If trying to play GoPro captured video using Windows Media Player the footage will appear to run slower that it should. You need to use a player that supports the video format out of the box. I recommend VLC player a quick and easy solution. Yo can download this free media player from the http://www.videolan.org

MX Adventures

A Supercross is usually filled with its share of dramatic moments. From the jump off the gate to those first turn pile ups, all the way to that finish and everything in between, the action at Supercross is always nonstop.

The 2010 Phoenix Supercross had more dramatic moments than your normal race. However it was in those days that followed that the drama grew with various opinions that were blasted across message boards and blogs. I certainly appreciated the hot topics brought to the surface by the many people who love the sport of Supercross. And like you I have my own thoughts on the James Stewart and Chad Reed 'incident' ...

It was just one year ago when a controversy made headlines with Jason Lawrence, Josh Hansen and Steve Boniface were 'fighting'.

The backlash for those guys were met by AMA officials. Last year the Rules stated that the following offense is subject to disciplinary action:

An attack on a Racing official and/or engaging in a fight. This includes any person who attacks or is involved in a fight anywhere on the premises prior to, during, or after an AMA Supercross meet. There will be no maximum fine or suspension period for this offense.

My point here is that Supercross is no stranger to its share of drama but in the aftermath of last year, and now Phoenix, what does it take to show some true sportsmanship and character in tough occupation?

James commented thru his blog initially. Info on Chad Reed came thru Kawasaki and Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Manager Mike Fisher stated that Chad would not return to racing until he is 100 percent. Chad is expected to miss a minimum of six weeks to heal his broken left hand. Six to seven weeks puts us near the Daytona Supercross and by then there will still be eight races left on the schedule.
